VIDEO: Kendricks on Defensive Struggles

SEP. 7 -- Eric Kendricks talks about the reasons for the poor defensive showing against Memphis...

Eric Kendricks discusses the defensive issues that plagued UCLA against Memphis:

On the tackling issues:
We'll correct it in practice. Sometimes it doesn't go your way, and we'll get to practice and work on it.

On if Memphis' misdirection caused problems:
Absolutely, we gameplanned for them and watched a lot of film and they brought out some wrinkles. And they were gashing us.

On if they'll have to prepare for that moving forward:
Absolutely, we have to have that what-if mindset. That's on us and we have to be better than that.

On how they fix that:
Practicing. You have to practice the mental reps as well. They ran a power screen and that same formation many times and we all thought it was power many times and bit on it and they ran the screen on them. Hats off to them. We have to be prepared and know our assignment. It's scout team work, but also mental reps and what if reps and we have to work on the things we can't control.

On the defense taking a step back:
The fact that they were scoring more. I felt like we were all on board but maybe too aggressive and popping in to gaps.

On what positives they took:
We got a good team win, at the end of the day, a win is a win. Our morale is alright and we came out healthy.

On facing Texas next week:
We're going to prepare like it's any other game, come in on Monday, come in Sunday and watch film, practice really hard and be physical and be ready for Texas.
