UCLA Prospect Preview: Week Two

SEP. 12 -- A look at the games this weekend involving UCLA commits and recruits in Week Two...

Game of the Week: Bellflower (Calif.) St. John Bosco vs. Portland (Ore.) Central Catholic
This matches up two defending state champions from the highest level. Bosco won the CIF State Open Division title last year in California while Central Catholic won the Oregon 6A state title. Bosco is led by the nation's top quarterback, Josh Rosen, UCLA's quarterback commit. The Braves have a slew of stars in their sophomore and junior classes too, namely four-star 2016 running back Sean McGrew and D.J. Morgan, a safety/receiver. Central Catholic features an offensive line with three D-I prospects and the Northwest's top running back, Cameron Scarlett, who has UCLA in his top five and will visit them officially.

Fresno (Calif.) Clovis North vs. Atwater (Calif.) Buhach Colony
The Broncos come in loaded with one of the Central Section's best teams and they have a pair of Pac-12 commits plus several other D-I prospects on their team. Bolu Olorunfunmi, a three-star running back committed to UCLA, heads into his third year as the starter in the backfield and rushed for 130 yards last week in his season debut. Fullback Westin Hatcher, who leads the way for Bolu, is a Top 5 fullback in the West. Defensively, Bransin Johnson, Malachi Foote and Noruwa Obanor are a part of a secondary that has all three with D-I offers. Linebacker Hayden Haupt has a number of offers too. Scout 100 defensive tackle Jacob Daniel, a commit to USC, is the top defender on the Broncos, but a knee injury suffered last season keeps him out until next month. After getting roughed up last week by Folsom, the Broncos are looking to get back in to the win column.

Los Angeles (Calif.) Dorsey at Santa Margarita (Calif.)
Santa Margarita fields one of the nation top 2016 quarterbacks in K.J. Costello. The 6-foot-5, 220-pound signal caller was recently offered a scholarship by UCLA and USC, giving Costello more than a dozen scholarships offers to date. The Eagles also feature 6-foot-5, 235-pound defensive end, Rick Wade, who committed to UCLA over several other Pac-12 schools in July. Dorsey is down in talent compared to years past

Las Vegas (Nev.) Bishop Gorman vs. Corona (Calif.) Centennial
Gorman's 2014 Western tour puts them against another powerhouse. Gorman has UCLA commit Alize Jones as their top prospect, the five-star tight end also playing defensive end. Gorman also has UCLA target Cordell Broadus at receiver and 2017 quarterback Tate Martell, a Washington commit, now completely running the Gaels offense. Another 2017 four-star is receiver Tyjon Lindsey, a versatile all-purpose weapon. The Huskies have a great one-two punch at receiver led by California commit Greyson Bankhead and standout junior Javon McKinley. Also watch out for junior J.J. Taylor to have a breakout season at running back, receiver and returning kicks. He's not the biggest but he's as electric a player as you'll find in Southern California and he was the running back MVP at the Los Angeles NFTC. Defensively, Oregon corner commit Jihree Stewart leads the secondary and fellow corner Gabreal Hughes will be one of the fastest players on the field.

Honolulu (Hawaii) St. Louis vs. Honolulu (Hawaii) Iolani
Fred Ulu-Perry, the top center prospect nationally, who's committed to UCLA, anchors the St. Louis offensive line and also plays on the defensive line. The Crusaders also boast four-star 2016 receiver Drew Kobayashi and sleeper 2015 quarterback Ryder Kuhns. Iolani has Hawaii commit Kamuela Borden on the offensive line opening holes for 2016 running back Jordan Ross.

Honolulu (Hawaii) Punahou vs. Honolulu (Hawaii) St, Francis
Punahou is home to two more Scout 300 prospects that UCLA is recruiting, offensive lineman Semisi Uluave and defensive end Canton Kaumatule, who's also playing tackle.

Westlake (Calif.) vs. Long Beach (Calif.) Poly
Poly is loaded all over and could have their most talented teams in years. DB Iman Marshall is one of the nation's top corners and will see time at receiver as well. Defensive lineman Joseph Wicker can play inside or outside, and is coming offten sacks in his past two games, and that led UCLA to offer him last weekend. Defensive back Colin Samuel gives the Jackrabbits two of the biggest and most talented corners in the state. Josh Love is a smooth, efficient quarterback and junior receiver Jack Jones, who UCLA offered at their camp this summer, is one of the most explosive players in the state. Westlake boasts the West's top quarterback for 2016, five-star Malik Henry.

Upland (Calif.) vs. Las Flores (Calif.) Tesoro
UCLA linebacker commit Josh Woods is part of a talented Upland team which features two Washington State commits, Kameron Powell and Tyler Hilinski and 2017 four-star athlete Nathan Tilford, who has a UCLA offer already. Tesoro has 2016 Scout 300 quarterback Devon Modster and 2015 three-star receiver Jake Smeltzer.

Temecula (Calif.) Great Oakvs. Moreno Valley (Calif.) Rancho Verde
UCLA offensive line commit Tevita Halalilo and Rancho Verde, which features Florida commit Sheriron Jones at quarterback and Arizona verbal Cedric Peterson, takes on Great Oak in Week Two.

DeSoto (Texas) vs. Dallas (Texas) South Oak Cliff
UCLA defensive tackle commit Bryce English and DeSoto will face South Oak Cliff, with a UCLA coach or two expected briefly, just hours the Bruins take on Texas in Arlington.

Mesquite (Texas) Poteet vs. Richardson (Texas) Berkner
UCLA coaches are expected at Poteet-Berkner to see the nation's top linebacker, Malik Jefferson, one of UCLA's chief targets, who plans to visit, as well as four-star linebacker DeAndre McNeal.

Herriman (Utah) vs. Highland (Utah) Lone Peak
UCLA verbal Andre James and Herriman take on Lone Peak, with new quarterback Justin Miller.

Orange (Calif.) Lutheran vs. Yorba Linda (Calif.)
The Lancers are paced by five-star outside linebacker Keisean Lucier-South, one of UCLA's top targets in the class as well as Nevada verbal Riley Brand.

Salt Lake City (Utah) Brighton vs. West Valley City (Utah) Hunter
Hunter has tight end Noah Togiai, a basketball commit to Utah who has several football offers and the Utes are hoping he does both sports for them. Brighton has the state's top prospect, and one of UCLA's primary targets, Osa Masina, leading them offensively and defensively.

Others
Manvel (Texas) and UCLA commit William Lockett have a bye this weekend. Jacksonville (Fla.) Trinity Christian Academy and UCLA commit Victor Alexander play Jacksonville (Fla.) University Christian. Lakeland (Fla.) Christian running back T.J. Simmons is out for the season with a broken leg so will miss their game against Kissimmee (Fla.) Liberty. Lodi (Calif.) Tokay receiver L.J. Reed is still out after transferring from Cosumnes Oaks and won't play tonight against Modesto (Calif.) Downey. San Leandro (Calif.) athlete Stephen Johnson is out indefinitely with a foot injury and will miss the game against San Jose (Calif.) Bellarmine.
