Prospect Recap: Week Three

SEP. 23 -- We look at how UCLA prospects did in week three of the high school football season...

Game of the Week: Las Vegas (Nev.) Bishop Gorman def. Santa Margarita (Calif.), 41-10
In their final prep before their monster matchup with St. John Bosco, Bishop Gorman had no problems with Santa Margarita. UCLA tight end commit Alize Jones had four catches for 33 yards and had two pass deflections on defense. Cordell Broadus caught a 27-yard touchdown in the win. Junior quarterback K.J. Costell was 24-of-45 for 320 yards in the loss while receiver Kyle Sweet caught 10 passes for 109 yards and kicked a field goal. UCLA commit Rick Wade had a sack in the game.

Fresno (Calif.) Edison def. Fresno (Calif.) Clovis North, 21-20
UCLA running back commit Bolu Olorunfunmi ran for 144 yards and a touchdown in a narrow loss to Edison, which stopped the Broncos in the final seconds.

Honolulu (Hawaii) St. Louis def. Honolulu (Hawaii) Kamehameha, 46-38
Defense was completely optional in this game, and neither team seemed to want to play it, with over 1,300 yards in total offense coming in the game. St. Louis, behind four-star offensive lineman Fred Ulu-Perry, a UCLA verbal, ran for 365 yards and passed for another 399, to rack up 764 yards in the win, St. Louis' third in a row.

Corona (Calif.) Centennial def. Long Beach (Calif.) Poly, 42-34
Centennial bounced back from a heartbreaking loss to Bishop Gorman to knock off previously unbeaten Poly. Junior receiver Javon McKinley, who was offered by UCLA over the weekend, had three catches for 199 yards and two touchdowns, one an 85-yard touchdown catch. 2016 running back J.J. Taylor rushed for 193 yards on 21 carries and a pair of touchdowns. UCLA defensive line target Joseph Wicker had eight tackles and four for a loss. UCLA receiver recruit Jack Jones, a 2016 two-way threat with an offer from the Bruins, had four catches for 47 yards and four tackles. Iman Marshall had two tackles and two pass deflections before being knocked out with a head injury.

Santa Ana (Calif.) Mater Dei def. Upland, 28-14
UCLA linebacker commit Josh Woods rushed for 43 yards on four carries and had six tackles and a hurry in the loss to the Monarchs. UCLA 2017 recruit Nathan Tilford had only 58 yards in offense.

San Juan Capistrano (Calif.) JSerra def. Ventura (Calif.) St. Bonaventure, 42-28
With UCLA defensive line coach Angus McClure looking on, rising 2015 prospect D.J. Bailey had two sacks in their surprising win over St. Bonaventure.

Redlands (Calif.) East Valley def. Moreno Valley (Calif.) Rancho Verde, 35-19
UCLA offensive line commit Tevita Halalilo and Rancho Verde suffered their first loss of the season, one of their lowest offensive outputs of the season. Oregon commit Malik Lovette had 96 yards in offense and a touchdown. Rancho Verde did run for over 200 yards in the loss.

Herriman (Utah) def. Sandy (Utah) Jordan, 63-42
UCLA verbal Andre James and Herriman exploded on offense to beat Wisconsin commit Austin Kafentzis and Jordan. James and the Herriman ground game ran for almost 600 yards in the win, which had quarterbacks coach Taylor Mazzone in attendance.

Orange (Calif.) Lutheran def. Long Beach (Calif.) Cabrillo, 52-8
The Lancers had no issues with Cabrillo and cruised to a blowout win, which had UCLA defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich watching five-star Keisean Lucier-South. On the night, Lucier-South had 2.5 tackles, four hurries and a sack.

Salt Lake City (Utah) Brighton def. West Valley City (Utah) Hunter, 34-6
Brighton got a big defensive push from five-star Osa Masina, with the outside linebacker racking up 13 tackles and a sack in the win, setting up their matchup with Bingham this week.

San Marcos (Calif.) Mission Hills def. Poway (Calif.), 49-0
With UCLA defensive backs coach Demetrice Martin in attendance, four-star cornerback Dechaun Holiday had a 70-yard pick six, a 44-yard touchdown reception and a 23-yard touchdown reception, all in the first quarter, and didn't even need to see the field in the second half. Holiday and the Mission Hills defense hasn't given up a point in 10 quarters.

Riverside (Calif.) Poly def. Riverside (Calif.) King, 23-20
Martin got another productive visit in over the weekend, seeing Riverside Poly four-star Ykili Ross clinch the win for Poly with an interception in the final seconds to snuff out King's rally.

DeSoto (Texas) def. Cibolo (Texas) Steele, 29-24
UCLA defensive line commit Bryce English had two tackles for loss on the final series to help DeSoto hold on and beat Cibolo Steele.

Jacksonville (Fla.) Trinity Christian Academy def. Madison County (Fla.), 42-7
UCLA linebacker commit Victor Alexander had nine tackles, 1.5 for loss and forced a fumble in their blowout win. Jeff Holland had three tackles and a sack for TCA.

Others:
UCLA commit William Lockett and Manvel (Texas) had a pair of tackles in a 35-10 win over Houston (Texas) Dobie. Bellflower (Calif.) St. John Bosco and UCLA commit Josh Rosen had a bye. Lakeland (Fla.) Christian running back T.J. Simmons is out for the season with a broken leg and his team had a bye. Lodi (Calif.) Tokay receiver L.J. Reed is still out after transferring from Cosumnes Oaks and missed their 49-0 win over Stockton (Calif.) Franklin. San Leandro (Calif.) athlete Stephen Johnson is out indefinitely with a foot injury and missed a 42-6 loss to Oakley (Calif.) Freedom.
