Sleeper Brown Has Coaches Awake and Wide-Eyed

Jebias Brown, DB, 6-0, 180, Milpitas (Calif.) High, hasn't gotten a great deal of press hype, but college coaches have definitely discovered him.

Brown said he's getting attention from powers in the Pac-10, Big Ten and Big 12.

"Yeah, it's fun," Brown said. "You can go pretty unnoticed in Milpitas."

Milpitas, though, was pretty familiar to college coaches two years ago when current Bruin wide receiver Tab Perry was a senior. Perry and Brown, in fact, are in pretty regular contact.

"Tab's a former teammate and I'm pretty close to him," Brown said.

Has he influenced Brown at all about colleges? "Sure," said Brown. "When he's in town, we get together and he tells me, ‘Hey, the coaches are loving you, you should really go to UCLA.' He then tries to persuade me by saying I could be his rommate. So, yeah, he's doing a good job. He likes it there a lot."

Brown, who is considered a great corner prospect, said that UCLA is his clear leader, followed by Arizona, Nebraska, Illinois and USC. If he had to take five trips in the next month, those would be his five, he said.

"UCLA is kind of close to where I live. It's not really that close, but close enough. It has the academics I'm looking for. What's important to me are academics, athletics and location. And UCLA has all of that. My grandma and mom want me to go to a UC school because of the education. So, it's a good fit."

When asked if UCLA has offered him a scholarship, Brown said they hadn't yet. "They can't call me right now. I get letters from them a few times a week, though. The last time I talked to them, they said they needed to see how I scored on the SAT, that I needed to get a passing score. I hadn't gotten my score back by then. Then I got it – and it was 1,000. So it's looking pretty good." Brown said his GPA is in the 2.8 to 3.0 range.

Brown, who runs in the 4.45 range in the 40 and jumped 32 inches in the vertical, said he wants to take his trips, but if UCLA offered it could be enticing. "I really want to take my trips. But if UCLA offered, I mostly likely could commit, because they're my favorite. I don't know. I really want to take my trips, though. You want to make sure. Something could change and you might want to go somewhere else."
