Prospect Recap: Week Eight

OCT. 27 -- We look at how UCLA prospects did in week eight of the high school football season...

Game of the Week: Riverside (Calif.) Poly def. Moreno Valley (Calif.) Rancho Verde, 59-45
After trailing 45-31 going in to the fourth quarter, Riverside Poly, behind a big night from four-star Ykili Ross, rallied to stun the Mustangs and move in to sole possession of first place in their league, scoring 28 points in the fourth quarter. Ross had two catches for 90 yards, and added a 65-yard touchdown off an interception in the final minute to seal the win. UCLA commit Tevita Halalilo helped the Mustang offense score 31 first half points, but then running back Jamal Scott was injured and Poly began their rally.

Honolulu (Hawaii) Punahou def. Honolulu (Hawaii) St. Louis, 35-28
Punahou scored a late touchdown in the fourth quarter to complete their comeback win over St. Louis and move to the state championship game. The Crusaders, led by UCLA commit Fred Ulu-Perry, jumped out to a 13-0 lead on the Buffnblu but then Punahou, which features heavy UCLA lean Semisi Uluave, kicked it in and scored late to earn their fourth straight ILH title. St. Louis has nearly 400 yards in offense while Punahou had 543 yards.

Fresno (Calif.) Clovis North def. Fresno (Calif.) Central, 41-15
UCLA running back pledge Bolu Olorunfunmi had one of his biggest games of the season to help North roll in the second half. Bolu ran for 269 yards and three touchdowns, with 221 of those yards coming in the second half.

Bellflower (Calif.) St. John Bosco def. Orange (Calif.) Lutheran, 54-43
Bosco got a test from Orange Lutheran but pulled away in the second half. UCLA quarterback commit Josh Rosen was his normal, steady self, going 19-for-28 for 239 yards and two touchdowns and running for a touchdown. UCLA 2016 target Sean McGrew carried the ball 20 times for 157 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

Santa Margarita (Calif.) vs. Anaheim (Calif.) Servite, 22-17
Santa Margarita got 12 tackles from UCLA defensive end commit Rick Wade and frustrated Oregon commit Travis Waller all night. Junior four-star quarterback K.J. Costello had only 124 yards passing and a touchdown pass in a game that was heavy on the ground. Servite lost receiver Equanimeous St. Brown to an undisclosed injury in the game.

San Leandro (Calif.) def. Oakland (Calif.) Bishop O'Dowd, 17-10
After missing the majority of his senior season with a foot injury, UCLA commit Stephen Johnson had over 100 yards in total offense and pushed the Pirates past O'Dowd. 2016 linebacker Camilo Eifler, who UCLA offered last week, had an interception off a pass from Johnson in the loss.

Upland (Calif.) def. Rancho Cucamonga (Calif.) Los Osos, 38-0
UCLA linebacker commit Josh Woods made an impact on offense, rushing for two touchdowns and finishing with 62 yards on seven carries. He also did his part on defense, with six tackles and a sack.

Lodi (Calif.) Tokay def. Stockton (Calif.) Lincoln, 22-21
UCLA commit L.J. Reed rotated in at quarterback and was 10-for-21 for 164 yards, throwing an interception but threw a touchdown that cut the lead to three and an ensuing onside kick that Tokay receovered set up the game-winning field goal.

Herriman (Utah) def. Pleasant Grove (Utah), 41-20
With 381 yards rushing in the win, Herriman followed UCLA verbal Andre James and the offensive line to an easy victory.

Salt Lake City (Utah) Brighton def. Sandy (Utah) Alta, 52-21
Five-star target Osa Masina ran for 81 yards on five carries and scored a touchdown, caught four passes for 56 yards, had four tackles and added a sack in a 31-point win.

Ventura (Calif.) St. Bonaventure def. Westlake Village (Calif.) Oaks Christian, 21-17
USC commit Ricky Town threw a 67-yard touchdown pass with 1:57 left in the game to help the Seraphs rally to beat the Lions. UCLA commit Michael Pittman had a big night, with six catches for 162 yards and a touchdown that put the Lions in front in the last five minutes before the Seraphs rallied to win.

Phoenix (Ariz.) Desert Vista def. Tempe (Ariz.) Corona Del Sol, 36-22
UCLA's newest commit, defensive end Cassius Peat, ran for a touchdown, had three tackles and one for a loss, but Corona Del Sol dropped a league game.

Others:
UCLA commit William Lockett and Manvel (Texas) stayed unbeaten with a 61-7 win over Pasadena (Texas) Sam Rayburn. Los Angeles (Calif.) Windward and UCLA commit Breland Brandt lost 63-0 to Lancaster (Calif.) Paraclete, though Brandt is done for the season with a leg injury and didn't play. Lakeland (Fla.) Christian running back T.J. Simmons is still out with a broken leg and missed a 37-7 win over Tampa (Fla.) Catholic. Las Vegas (Nev.) Bishop Gorman and UCLA tight end commit Alize Jones had a bye. Long Beach (Calif.) Poly and UCLA targets Joseph Wicker and Iman Marshall had a bye this weekend. Jacksonville (Fla.) Trinity Christian Academy and UCLA commit Victor Alexander were on a bye.
