You don’t see many prospects who pass the look test quite like Derek Culver. The Warren (Ohio) Harding power forward has all the physical tools you would want in a power forward at the highest level, and now is beginning to emerge on the national radar.
Like most young kids from the state of Ohio, Culver didn’t play up on the AAU circuit with Ohio Basketball Club, instead focusing on dominating his age level. After a breakout performance in July and a follow up showing this past weekend at the NY2LA Futures Camp, a lot more attention could be coming his way.
For now though the 6-foot-8 and 215 pound Culver says he is focused on some big goals during his sophomore season in high school.
“My team and I are focused on making it deeper in the playoffs this year,” said Culver. “We got bounced in the first round last year and we weren’t happy with that, so we are focused on making a deep run.”
Recruiting wise Culver already claims a handful of offers with others beginning to pay significant attention.
“I have offers from Kent State, Cleveland State, Xavier, and Dayton,” said Culver. “Also I have interest from West Virginia, Ohio State, and California.”
While those schools are currently showing him interest, there are a few other programs around the country that Culver is high on.
“I am hoping to visit UCLA,” said Culver. “That is always a school I have wanted to go to. Also I want to see Memphis. I am from Memphis and grew up watching Derrick Rose, Chris Douglas-Roberts, Joey Dorsey, and those guys.”
Currently a decision is a ways away from Culver, instead he says he just wants to have a big high school season and see what offers come his way.
“I want to get like 10 rebounds and 15 points a game this year and just improve as a player overall,” noted Culver.
