That's why taking an in-season visit was important for Lockett, and the Bruin pledge visited for UCLA's game with USC.
"That was my first time at the Rose Bowl and it was really nice and being in a place like that was crazy," said Lockett. "Coming from Texas, when I was growing up I watched USC play Texas in the Rose Bowl and always wanted to go there. It was real nice."
Seeing the Bruins beat the Trojans on the visit was an added bonus.
"Them playing and beating USC was what made it really exciting and I really wanted to be there when they played them," said Lockett. "Being in the locker room after, I was so happy that they won. When I went to Oklahoma, they got blown out by Baylor and the mood was different, but the UCLA players were hyped after that game."
The visit, which Lockett was joined by his mother, sealed his commitment for the Bruins.
"I just wanted to go and see how it really was during the school year and during the season," said Lockett. "I had committed but I wanted to see how my official visit was different and to solidify my commitment. And my commitment is solid. I'm done taking visits. I'll sign with UCLA in February."
It also gave him a chance to spend time recruiting another Midlands player that UCLA is heavily recruiting, Josh Wariboko, who was also on his official visit.
"We were telling Josh, who was with Simon as well, that he needs to commit," said Lockett. "It's going to be really exciting there for the next few years and we were working on him."
The visit was a different one for Lockett from his trip to Norman, the results of the game aside.
"L.A. and Norman are two different environments," said Lockett. "Being in L.A., there was a lot more movement and a lot more going on in the city besides football. I loved it in L.A."
Lockett got to spend ample time with the Bruin coaches, specifically defensive backs coach Demetrice Martin and head coach Jim Mora.
"It was good to talk to Coach Meat," said Lockett. "We always talk about what I’m going to do there. I was happy that my mom got to meet the coaches. With Coach Mora, we talked a lot during the trip."
While his Manvel team is unbeaten and continuing their run in the state playoffs, Lockett returned to practice but also returned to recruiter of other UCLA targets in the Lone Star State.
"I just talked to Ryan Newsome a couple of days ago and I was telling him about the game and he was asking about it," said Lockett. "He took his visit a few weeks back and loved it so I was telling him how good the trip for me was. I'm trying to get him there too."
