It started even before his senior highlights went viral.
Steilacoom (Wash.) linebacker Fotu Leiato (6-0, 200), had a handful of offers before his film went crazy over the weekend.
Once his highlights (seen below), though, hit the internet, his stock and interest soared.
"He received an offer from San Diego State after the highlight film kind of exploded over the weekend," said Steilacoom assistant coach William Garrow.
And it may not be done.
"It’s hard to say which schools are close to offering, but we’ve had contact from a lot of different schools in the last 48 hours. We’ve communicated with coaches from Oregon State, Washington, California, Nevada, Arkansas, Boise State and North Texas, to name a few," said Garrow.
Washington is stopping by on Wednesday and UCLA assistant coach Mike Tuiasosopo stopped by on Tuesday.
And Leiato has been on the phone quite a bit.
"Fotu has talked to coaches from most of those schools on the phone as well in the last day or two. We’ve sent transcripts and test scores to all of those programs. I imagine we’ll know more about where each team stands in the next few days after they have had a chance to sit down as a staff and evaluate," said Leiato.
His film shows him destroying players, especially on special teams, but he can play a number of spots on defense.
"Depending on the defensive scheme, he could be a drop-down safety or an outside linebacker type of kid," said Garrow. "He has the frame to put on weight in a collegiate level nutrition/strength program, and he’s not done growing. Most schools are recruiting him as someone that would develop into a outside linebacker type. And special teams of course, many schools have said they see him contributing right away in that facet."
This weekend, Leiato will take his first official visit, to Wyoming, and he'll visit Washington State next month.
"He is scheduled to take an official visit to Washington State on January 16-18," said Garrow. "Other than that he hasn’t confirmed any official visits. He has some options if he wants to take them."
A decision will come when Leiato is ready, with no set time frame in mind.
"He just said that he’ll make the decision when he knows it is right. I think he’ll want to get into the dead period after his visit to Wyoming, sit down in December with his family, evaluate the options, look at each of the schools, talk with the various coaches a little more and make a commitment during that time if it feels right to him."
Garrow said that Leiato is handling all of the newfound attention well.
"He has been great," said Leaito. "Thankfully, he’s staying off of social media and websites. It’s really nice all of the things that some people have said, but then there’s also the people who will say hurtful things about him when they’ve never met him. It’s definitely a learning experience, for us all. He’s handling it really well though. He’s naturally a quiet and humble kid anyway, so that’s great. He’s not really comfortable answering questions, talking about himself, or being in the spotlight, so he’s handled it really well."
