Four-star junior college offensive lineman Zach Bateman signed with UCLA today. Bateman, out of Costa Mesa (Calif.) Orange Coast College, will have two years left to play, and is expected to compete for playing time in his first year.
At 6'7 and 320 pounds, Bateman projects most readily at offensive tackle, though he may have some position versatility. As it stands, with Conor McDermott emerging as a legitimate left tackle this year, Bateman will likely compete at right tackle when he comes in this spring.
Bateman, who is the #16 JUCO prospect in the country and #2 JUCO offensive lineman, is the first signee in what should be a monster offensive line class for UCLA offensive line coach Adrian Klemm. Klemm has received verbal commitments from four-star center Fred Ulu-Perry, four-star offensive tackle Andre James, and four-star offensive guard Tevita Halalilo, with irons in the fire with several other big-time offensive linemen nationwide. The class could end up rivaling Klemm's 2013 OL haul.
