Masina Breaks Down Final Three

Dec. 26 -- Utah five-star linebacker Osa Masina, after he completed all of his official visits a few weeks ago went under ground a bit, but he emerged today to give us a little preview of his upcoming decision...

Osa Masina has had a solid top three of Arizona State, UCLA and USC for some time now and said all three schools are still in the running.

"I loved all three of those official visits and had two great home visits with each of them as well," Masina said. "My recent visit to USC was really good. I had been there twice before and I've known those coaches for a long time. They have been recruiting me since they were at Washington and when were talking, it doesn't even seem like they're recruiting me, we're just having a regular conversation and I like that about them.

"I got to watch them play Notre Dame and they really hammered them. I like the players on the team a lot and got to talk to guys like Sua Cravens and Leonard Williams and see how they like. It's one thing talking to the coaches but you can learn a lot talking to the players and everyone had nothing but great things to say."

There was a lot of buzz following his USC visit that Masina could even be close to pulling the trigger.

"I stay off the message boards so I didn't read all that," Masina said. "I was never going to make an emotional or quick decision after a trip. I could have easily committed to UCLA or ASU after the visits because of how much I enjoyed it there but right after taking a visit is not the time to make a decision.

"Each school has come in twice for home visits and I've met with all three head coaches as well. They each came to a basketball game and also over to the house and I really like all three staffs a lot. Coach Mora and Ulbrich have made a big impression for UCLA, I like Coach Sirmon and Tui a lot at USC and Coach Graham is a great guy at ASU. I probably have the best relationship with Graham among all the head coaches and all three staffs have a lot of NFL experience so that's why this decision has been so tough."

Masina said he sees himself playing a similar role in all three defenses.

"They all like me as a standup linebacker who can rush the passer," Masina said. "ASU talked to me a lot about playing offense early in the process because the offensive coaches like me a lot but they're mostly saying defense now too. I fit in well with all of their schemes, they're all aggressive and like me as a hybrid rush end/outside 'backer and I'm comfortable in that role.

"I'm still sorting out my decision and won't be committing at the Army Game. I would rather do it at my school in front of my teammates and classmates. I'm not sure when it will be but possibly a week or so after I get back from the Army game. It's about time for me to do something and even though I'm not ready yet, the longer it goes on, the harder it's going to be. I'm sure I could go back and forth among all three schools until Signing Day if I wanted to but I need to start overanalyzing and just make a decision. I know I can't go wrong with any of those three schools so I'm confident I'll make a great choice."
