West Recruiting Notebook

Jan. 24 -- We look at the latest news and notes from out West as well as an overview of the weekend visits...

Penultimate Visit Weekend

Its the final weekend before the final weekend.

With just two more visit weekends before National Signing Day, this weekend will be a big one for schools hosting recruits.

Some will have big weekends, like Cal and Oregon State.

Some will go medium sized groups like Arizona, which is heavy on commits in town.

Others will just have a small handful like Washington, Washington State, USC, UCLA, Utah, Colorado and Oregon while Stanford did their big recruiting weekend last week and is done hosting visitors.

A number of Mountain West schools will have key visitors, albeit not big groups, like Boise State, San Diego State, Nevada and Wyoming.

Cal's visit list will include players from all over the country, but a good chunk of them are commits from the West and a couple of key targets. Their big uncommitted visitors are Buena Park (Calif.) receiver Jaylinn Hawkins and San Diego (Calif.) St. Augustine safety Frank Buncom. Committed visitors include Napa (Calif.) receiver Austin Arron, Corona (Calif.) Centennial receiver Greyson Bankhead, Fresno (Calif.) Central tight end Zeandae Johnson, Honolulu (Hawaii) Punahou receiver Kanawai Noa, Chino Hills (Calif.) Ayala safety Malik Psalms and Sammamish (Wash.) Skyline outside linebacker Cameron Saffle.

Oregon State and Gary Andersen will bring a good chunk of visitors from the West, including a couple from Utah, where Andersen is from, including American Fork (Utah) lineman James Empey and running back Lopini Katoa and West Valley City (Utah) Hunter tight end Noah Togiai. Los Angeles (Calif.) Cathedral defensive end Simi Moala and Kahuku (Hawaii) tight end Tuli Wily-Matagi will also be in Corvallis.

Arizona will welcome Folsom (Calif.) offensive lineman Cody Creason, Moreno Valley (Calif.) Rancho Verde receiver Cedric Peterson and Murrieta (Calif.) Vista Murrieta tight end Jamie Nunley flanked by Scottsdale (Ariz.) Chaparral tackle Keenan Walker, Gilbert (Ariz.) Campo Verde defensive lineman Finton Connelly, Tucson (Ariz.) Mountain View safety Demetrius Flanagan and Anthem (Ariz.) Boulder Creek offensive lineman Nathan Eldridge.

Arizona State will have two high-profile visitors this weekend in Army All-American defensive ends Porter Gustin from Salem Hills (Utah) and Rasheem Green from Gardena (Calif.) Serra as well as Norwalk (Calif.) defensive tackle Dillon Faamatau, a commit to Washington State.

Utah will host two commits in South Jordan (Utah) Bingham kicker Chayden Johnston and Scottsdale (Ariz.) Horizon offensive lineman Jake Grant and two in-state targets in Provo (Utah) Timpview defensive end Gabe Reid and teammate Britain Covey.

Washington's three visitors are all committed: Anaheim (Calif.) Servite longsnapper A.J. Carty, Seattle (Wash.) O'Dea running back Myles Gaskin and Oceanside (Calif.) cornerback Jordan Miller.

UCLA's three visitors are from out of the West, but they're big ones: the nation's top tight end, Chris Clark from Avon (Conn.) Old Farms and the nation's top offensive guard, Keller (Texas) four-star Maea Teuhema, a commit to LSU. Buffalo (N.Y.) Canisius defensive end Tyrone Wheatley will also be in town.

USC and Stanford had big visit weekends last weekend so they'll sit this one out.

Washington State has Santa Margarita (Calif.) receiver Kyle Sweet visiting, Colorado has Littleton (Colo.) Heritage defensive tackle Frank Umu coming in and Oregon will bring in Sacramento (Calif.) Grant offensive lineman Darrin Paulo.

San Diego State has a pair of four-stars coming to visit, Los Angeles (Calif.) Salesian linebacker Kyahva Tezino and Layton (Utah) Northridge cornerback Dayan Lake. The Aztecs also have Upland (Calif.) lineman Gary Baker and Rancho Cucamonga (Calif.) receiver Jerry Chaney.
