Newsome chose the Bruins over Texas, picking up the UCLA hat after a very long pause. He repeated, "For the next four years..." a few times before he said UCLA.
When asked about why UCLA, Newsome said, "They need a guy like me and they haven't had a guy like me."
He said UCLA Coach Jim Mora talked to him about early playing time. "Nothing's promised," Newsome said. "I don't want it to be handed to me. I have to be able to go in and do my part. It's only the beginning."
Newsome admitted that he struggled with the decision, making the choice to go away and leave his family. He said: "I was afraid to let somebody down, and I just didn't want to do that. I didn't want to let my state down, and even now I feel like I let my state down. Bu I know that if this is my state and they love me like they say they do, they'll be behind my decision no matter what. I'm so excited to be a UCLA Bruin. I can't wait for what God has in store for me."
Newsome made a phone call right before his announcement ceremony to Jonathan Gray, a former five-star recruit from Aledo. "He told me to do what's best for me, and I did," Newsome said.
How solid is Newsome with his UCLA commitment? Is the fact that he hesitated before announcing for UCLA an indication he could waver before Signing Day? <>br>
"My word is my bond," Newsome said. "I firmly believe that will all of my heart. I truly believe my word is my bond, and I'm going to stick to that. That's all I have at the end of the day. I think so many recruits kind of do stuff for dramatic effect, and that's not really me. I have faith that this is the place God called me to be. I was very scared when He told me because I love this state with all my heart and I love the Texas Longhorns. They know I feel about them."
