West Recruiting Notebook & Weekend Preview

A look at the latest news and notes from out West as well as preview of the weekend visits...

Scout 300 Announcements

Two of the West's top prospects announced their decisions in the last week, and both are headed to the Pac-12.

Salt Lake City (Utah) Brighton five-star linebacker Osa Masina, the top player in Utah in the 2015 class, committed to USC over Arizona State and UCLA.

San Diego (Calif.) St. Augustine safety Frank Buncom announced his decision to commit to Stanford, the longtime leader, on Wednesday.

With Signing Day just five days away, there are still several Scout 300 prospects from the West set to make a decision.

Track the announcement dates and predictions for West prospects in the Scout 300 Commitment Tracker.

Flip, Flip, Flipadelphia

The stretch run to Signing Day always brings a flip or two or nine.

The last week had a few big ones too, none bigger than Albuquerque (N.M.) Eldorado quarterback Zach Gentry flipping from Texas to Michigan.

Gentry had committed to the Longhorns in May but once Jim Harbaugh was hired, the Wolverines honed in on Gentry.

And the four-star, the No. 1 player in New Mexico, committed to the Wolverines on his visit.

Michigan flipped Gentry

Arizona State flipped Norwalk (Calif.) defensive lineman Dillon Faamatau while the Cougars landed Pasadena (Calif.) Muir receiver Taeon Mason, who'd been a longtime USC commit but parted ways shortly before committing to the Cougars.

Oregon State got Pago Pago (American Samoa) Leone defensive lineman Elu Aydon to switch to them, Aydon having been committed to Gary Andersen when he was at Wisconsin.

UNLV got a couple of flips themselves, from Sammamish (Wash.) Eastside Catholic center Alex Neale (Montana) and Kahuku (Hawaii) defensive lineman Salanoa Alo-Wily (Hawaii). And for the second time in three years, Cal was able to flip a Mekari, with Westlake (Calif.) offensive lineman Patrick Mekari switching to Cal from Utah State, just like his brother flipped from Arizona to Cal in 2013.

Final Visit Weekend

Its the final weekend before National Signing Day.

And most schools are laying low this weekend, some hosting just a couple, others hosting none at all.

UCLA, on the other hand, will have their biggest weekend for visitors, with a blend of commits and uncommitted targets.

The headline commit is Orange (Calif.) Lutheran five-star outside linebacker Keisean Lucier-South, and he'll be joined by two other commits in Upland (Calif.) linebacker Josh Woods and Long Beach (Calif.) Poly cornerback Colin Samuel.

Three Scout 100 prospects will be on campus this weekend, Long Beach (Calif.) Poly defensive end Joseph Wicker, San Marcos (Calif.) Mission Hills cornerback Dechaun Holiday and Montezuma (Ga.) Macon County linebacker Roquan Smith.

Colorado will host Valencia (Calif.) linebacker JayJay Wilson and Hawaii will host Honolulu (Hawaii) St. Louis center Fred Ulu-Perry.

Washington's biggest visitor is Chris Warren, the four-star running back from Rockwall (Texas) and they'll also host in-state commit Henry Roberts, the four-star offensive lineman from Bellevue (Wash.).

Several national programs will be hosting West Coast visitors this weekend too.

Los Angeles (Calif.) Cathedral defensive end Simi Moala is visiting Miami while Gardena (Calif.) Serra receiver Deontay Burnett will visit Michigan.
