Get to Know 2016: Sean McGrew

Feb. 11 -- 2016 running back Sean McGrew, from St. John Bosco, is already a heavy UCLA lean...

Evaluation:
McGrew has legitimate track speed, which he showed off to great effect in his junior season. His frame (he's legitimately probably not taller than 5'7) would indicate that he would have a hard time as a full-time running back at the college level, but he actually showed willingness, and a surprising bit of power, during the season when asked to run between the tackles. He has excellent balance, quickness, and speed, to go along with great vision. His most translatable skill, though, may be his ability to catch the ball out of the backfield. On swing passes and wheel routes, he was deadly all year, with linebackers and even safeties having virtually no chance of covering him. For UCLA's purposes, he also was catching balls from future UCLA starting quarterback Josh Rosen, so he already has a rapport built there.

Recruitment:
UCLA Offer Nothing is ever done in recruiting, but McGrew has been a heavy UCLA lean for quite some time now -- probably for well over a year now. It helps UCLA's cause considerably that his quarterback will be attending UCLA when McGrew enters college. The other early contenders for McGrew's services are Washington and California, but interestingly enough, he unofficially visited each of those two schools when they were playing UCLA. He attended several UCLA games throughout the year, and when we spoke to him, he made it clear that he'd also watched as many games as he could on television. At this point, we'd expect McGrew to commit to UCLA, and we wouldn't be shocked if it happened sooner rather than later.
