Chandler (Ariz.) running back Chase Lucas (6-1, 178), is holding 11 offers and a handful of them are standing out to him.

Arizona and Arizona State, the local schools, were the first ones to offer me so I will always keep that in mind, and then UCLA and Notre Dame, are other big offers for me,” said Lucas. “I’m excited for all the offers and the other schools coming in.”

Texas A&M has been active in Arizona the last couple of years, signing the state’s top prospect the last two classes and Lucas said the Aggies could be close to offering.

“I’ve been talking pretty regularly with Texas &M,” said Lucas. “That is a big school for me and N’Keal (Harry). When they offered him, they said they would come after me and they’re recruiting me to play defensive back.”

Arizona State, where his close friend and quarterback, Bryce Perkins is headed, is making Lucas a priority.

“Arizona State and Arizona have been doing a tremendous job of recruiting me,” said Lucas. “Bryce is recruiting me heavily. He loves Arizona State and I love Arizona State. It’s a big place for me. They’re doing a great job with me. Everyone at home wants you to stay home and be the hometown hero and that is a big thing to be a part of.”

UCLA, where Perkins’ older brother, Paul, is a running back, also is significantly impacting his recruitment.

“Paul is doing big things there and Brett (Hundley) is about to go to the league, and I’ve been following in their footsteps since I was eight and who knows, I could be following in their footsteps to college,” said Lucas. “Coach (Taylor) Mazzone is recruiting me.”

In all, Lucas has offers from Arizona, Arizona State, California, Colorado, Nebraska, Notre Dame, Oregon State, UCLA, Utah, Utah State and Washington.

Lucas said the majority of schools are recruiting him as an athlete.

“Everybody is recruiting me as an athlete,” said Lucas. “They don’t know where I’ll play yet and I don’t even know yet, but I’m a playmaker and I’ll make big plays on either side of the ball. I’ve been working as a receiver and corner this spring, but I’ll be working with the running backs at the Nike Camp next weekend.”

Lucas said he’s got an ideal time frame in mind for a decision.

“It will probably be in the middle of my season when I’ll name a top five,” said Lucas. “I will be taking all of my officials and then committing after the last one.”
