Gilliam Going on Spring Visits

Mar. 8 -- After a solid showing in Las Vegas at the Pylon 7v7 tournament over the weekend, Thousand Oaks (Calif.) quarterback Max Gilliam spent Monday checking out the Arizona schools...

Max Gilliam is one of the state's top quarterbacks and has looked good this winter on the 7v7 circuit. He has a solid frame, throws with touch and accuracy and is a good athlete as well. He's very mobile and with the pads on, is a legitimate dual threat quarterback who can beat a team with his arm or his legs.

On the recruiting front, Gilliam is still waiting for his first offer to roll in but is hearing from a handful of schools and visited Arizona and Arizona State on Monday.

"I hit up Arizona first and that was a great trip," Gilliam said. "I was there for about four hours, met all the coaches and really enjoyed myself. They were real organized and had a schedule of what I would be doing. I got there around around 9:00 and met the coaches and then took a campus tour. I saw the locker room, the weight room and went down to the field.

"Then a student came and showed me around the campus again and I met up with Coach Rodriguez and Rod Smith in the coaches office. They told me they were very interested in me and want to come out and see me throw in the spring. They also want me to camp with them and it sounds like if I do well, they could offer."

Next up for Gilliam was a trip to ASU.

"I was only there for about an hour, maybe a little less," Gilliam said. "Coach Norvell was there and we talked for a little bit and then an assistant took me around. They're doing a lot of construction with the facilities so I didn't see too much but it sounds like they're going to be real nice when it's finished.

"After a little tour, I went back and saw Coach Norvell again, talked for a few minutes and that was it. It was real short, I don't think they knew I was coming until the day before so it wasn't as planned out as the ASU visit and none of the coaches other than Coach Norvell were on campus that day."

Next up for Gilliam will be a visit to UCLA.

"I talked to Coach Mazzone this morning and I'm going to set up an unofficial visit to UCLA pretty soon here," Gilliam said. "UCLA has been talking to me a lot lately and I have a lot of interest. My mom went there and it was my favorite school growing up. They want me to camp with them as well and I definitely plan on doing that.

"If the right offer comes along, I could commit early but I'm not going to commit just to do it. I want to be sure I'm doing the right thing and will take my time and do official visits if I need to. It's a big decision so I don't want to rush in to anything."
