Surprise New Offer For Chrisman

Mar. 26 -- Ohio punter Drue Chrisman learned quickly Wednesday night how recruiting can change on a dime when UCLA extended a scholarship offer. Chrisman talks about his newest offer and on campus visit to Ohio State prior to the offer...

Scholarship offers from Florida State and BYU had Cincinnati (Ohio) La Salle punter Drue Chrisman thinking he could wrap up his recruitment in the next week or two. Wednesday night, Chrisman learned how quickly things can change when schools learn of a top level punter.

“I was offered by UCLA tonight,” said Chrisman. “This one was different than my other two offers as I had to travel to get them. This one I just called them on the phone and they offered. So I guess they really need a punter.”

The Bruins put special teams coach Scott White in charge of extending their interest in the Ohio native.

“I spoke with Coach White and he basically said they are really interested and had looked at my film,” he said. “He said they have a long snapper already, but are looking for a kicker and punter in my class and stressed they want me really bad and then laid an offer out for me.

“I honestly never thought about UCLA. I know they are big time and as soon as I told my dad, he started looking into them. My sister is big in to basketball and both their men and women’s basketball teams are in the Sweet 16. So I was like, this could really work out.”

Wednesday found Chrisman visiting Ohio State and a return trip to Florida State will happen this weekend.

Will UCLA be getting a visit anytime soon?

“We had originally planned to get this done in the next few weeks,” he explained. “We’d really like to get out to UCLA but not sure on the timing right now. So we’re going to look at things and see when we could visit and try to line something up.”

Prior to receiving his UCLA offer, Chrisman had visited Ohio State during the day to learn more about where the Buckeyes stood at this time.

“Coach (Greg) Gillum gave us a tour and then we spoke with Coach (Kerry) Coombs,” he said. “Coach (Urban) Meyer was working out and after he finished we went to his office to talk. He explained the situation with their current punter and mentioned a possible grayshirt. So he stressed they really hadn’t put too much thought in to it but stressed they don’t want to rush anything.

“They feel committing right after spring break is rushing things and don’t want to do that right now. The visit was great and their facilities are probably the best we’ve seen so far.”

Scout will catch up with Chrisman following his visit to Florida State and see what is next for the talented punter.
