VIDEO: Sampson Back On The Market

Mar. 30 -- Scout caught up with 2015 four-star Brandon Sampson, whose recruitment is back up in the air following a coaching staff shakeup at St. John's. Watch Sampson discuss getting back into recruiting and which schools have come calling...

With news Friday that St. John's (NY) and head coach Steve Lavin were parting ways came the reality that the recruiting process would begin anew for 2015 four-star guard Brandon Sampson.

The Baton Rouge native and two-time state champion at Madison Prep originally committed to Lavin and the Red Storm on Jan. 11, but Sampson is now reopening his recruitment as a result of the turnover on a staff with which he had several close relationships.

But, Sampson told Scout on Saturday, he hasn't completely ruled out St. John's, now searching for Lavin's replacement.

"It's kinda surprising," Sampson said. "(The recruiting part) is not really new because I know the process, but I'm still going to evaluate the (new) coaching staff at St. John's. I'm not going to completely cancel them out."

Sampson, the 2015 Most Outstanding Player in Class 1A of Louisiana, is not putting a time period on his commitment or signing, and his high school coach, Jeff Jones, indicated Sampson may opt to take his decision into the summer, not feeling bound in any way by the beginning of the regular signing period on April 15.

Jones heard from 26 different college programs on Friday after the Lavin news became official. According to Sampson, most of the contact is being funneled through his coach, but he did acknowledge hearing from VCU, Oklahoma State, LSU, California, USC and UCLA yesterday.
