Apr. 3 -- Just how close was Fontana (Calif.) Summit wide out Damian Alloway to committing to Cal a few weeks ago?
was originally supposed to be part of the big Ground Zero announcement ceremony last week where four of his 7v7 teammates made their college choices. Just a few days prior to the announcement date, Alloway backed out.
"I just wasn't ready," Alloway said. "I was going to pick California
, it was them and UCLA
but I had decided on Cal but didn't feel 100% about it and didn't want to commit and then maybe open things up or de-commit later in the year.
"I only want to commit one time and when I do it, I don't want to have any doubts. I have plenty of time here so I'm going to play things out more and wait until I'm 100% ready to do it."
As for what he likes about Cal, Alloway listed several things.
"They throw the ball a lot and they need receivers pretty bad," Alloway said. "I have a good relationship with the coaches, it's a great academic school, one of the best in the world and I like the location. Football wise, it's just a good fit for me, I like the scheme and how they would use me.
"With UCLA, I like them a lot too. I like the coaching staff there and I had a great visit to campus when I took an unofficial visit. The only downside is they don't really use slot receivers as much. Most of the receivers they have are the bigger, taller types so I'm not sure if that's what they prefer or if they just haven't been able to sign any."
Alloway said he doesn't have a set time frame for making a decision and is still open to other schools as well.
"I'm still hearing from schools like Oregon
, Notre Dame
and would love to get an offer from them," Alloway said. "I like Washington
a lot too and I want to visit Arizona
and Arizona State
"As for when I commit, at the earliest, it would be in the summer. I would love to make The Opening and if so, I'll do it there. I still plan to take my official visits though so I'm going to be going through the process for sure."
