Apr. 23 -- We had a chance to check out Manvel (Texas) running back D'Vaughn Pennamon when he was in town for the IMG tournament in Redondo, California a few weeks back and it may not be the last time he's in SoCal...
and the rest of his Team Texas Elite 7v7 squad hit the road a few weeks back for the IMG 7v7 tournament. While running backs never make too big of an impact in 7v7 play, Pennamon was a standout and tough to miss.
For starters, he has a great frame and looks about 6-1 and a rock solid 210 pounds. He runs well, catches the ball out of the backfield and you can only imagine what a load he would be to deal with when the pads come on.
For a back his size, he shows a nice burst and has just enough wiggle to keep you honest. He's a true downhill runner with the kind of combination of size and power that should allow him to see the field early at the next level.
While in town for the tourney, Pennamon and several of his teammates took an unofficial visit to USC
"USC was great, I liked it a lot there," Pennamon said. "I saw the campus and did the whole tour. We saw the locker room, the weight room and I was able to sit down and meet with the coaches. I mostly talked with Coach Sirmon and they're going to continue to evaluate me. They haven't offered yet but I'm on the board so hopefully they'll offer at a later time."
Pennamon does have an offer from the Trojans' crosstown rival, UCLA
"I didn't have a chance to visit UCLA but I have a lot of interest in them," Pennamon said. "They offered me about two months ago, I like the offense and I would like to come back for an official visit. I really like it out here, this was my first time in Cali but it's real nice and I'm interested in learning more about the program."
Pennamon said he doesn't have any leaders right now but mentioned a few schools that are standing out.
for sure," Pennamon said. "I like them a lot, I like their offensive line and that's obviously important for a running back. I like Kansas
, UCLA and Cal too. If USC offers, they would be in that list as well.
"My plan is to make a commitment at the end of the summer but I still want to take my official visits in the fall. I'm still evaluating everyone and not closing any doors to any schools right now."
