O'Bannon Sees Recruitment Expand

Over the course of his sophomore season, Las Vegas Bishop Gorman small forward Charles O'Bannon, Jr. showed steady progress, proving his placement in Scout’s 2017 Top 50.

Now the 6-foot-5, 190-pound small forward is seeing his recruitment expand as he’s had a prominent role on his Las Vegas Prospects AAU squad.

“I’ve been working out all the time,” O’Bannon said. “I’ve been getting in the gym before and after school. I’m trying to work on my game as much as I possibly can, every opportunity I get.”

The four-star prospect recently picked up an offer from UCLA, where his father, Charles O’Bannon, Sr., and uncle, Ed O’Bannon, helped the Bruins win a national championship in 1995.

“It was pretty cool with the tradition my dad and uncle have there,” O’Bannon, Jr. said. “They said ‘congratulations’ and of course they want me to go there.”

Even though the O’Bannon family has a prominent role in modern UCLA history, Charles, Sr. and Ed aren’t putting any pressure on Charles, Jr. to pick the Bruins.

“There’s no pressure whatsoever; just jokes for now,” O’Bannon said. “I don’t feel any pressure either. It’s more of a family thing if anything.”

UCLA isn’t the only school seriously pursuing O’Bannon, as a handful of others are also aggressively recruiting him.

Kansas, UConn and Louisville have also been recruiting me really hard,” O’Bannon said. “I like everything about Kansas; the way they play and the coaches are pretty cool.

“Rick Pitino is a GOAT; he’s one of the best coaches. I love how they get up and down. UConn recently won a national championship and Kevin Ollie is a really good coach. I know him cause of my dad.”

Even though it’s been speculated that O’Bannon could make an early decision, he claims that won’t be the case.

“End of my senior year,” O’Bannon gave as a timetable. “I’m in no rush at all.”
