For a young player, he plays with surprising confidence and isn't afraid to step up and meet a ball carrier head on. He closes very well and with two more years to develop physically and get bigger and stronger, it's easy to see he'll be among the top safety prospects in the West region by the time he's a senior.
On the recruiting front, McKinney recently landed his first scholarship offer and it's from one of the top programs out West.
"Arizona State offered me earlier this week," McKinney said. "They came to my practice on Tuesday, Coach Long came out and I could tell he was watching me. After he left, my coach came up to me and told me they were offering me. That was an awesome feeling and I was very excited to get that first offer from a school like ASU.
"I think Hawaii could be close to offering next and I'm hearing from Colorado as well. I got a camp invite from Boise State and I really want to go check them out in the summer so hopefully I can get out there. I've already been to Miami, Notre Dame and Northwestern with my B2G travel team and I really liked it out there a lot."
McKinney said he'll also spend some time checking out the local schools.
"I'm going to take an unofficial visit to UCLA and I want to camp at USC as well," McKinney said. "One of my teammates, Keisean Lucier-South, signed with UCLA and he's always talking them up to me. Right now, I'm open to everyone and just looking forward to going through the recruiting process and seeing who is all interested in me right now."
