UCLA Advances to Monday

After losing Saturday night to Maryland in the second game of the regional, the UCLA baseball team was faced with its most daunting challenge of the season: winning three straight games over two days to advance to the Super Regional.

Thanks to two dominant pitching performances and timely hitting, the Bruins are two-thirds of the way to their goal.

UCLA beat Bakersfield 9-1 in the opening game on Sunday to advance to the evening contest, and then capped off the day with a 4-2 win over Maryland. Dave Berg recorded the save Sunday night after throwing the final two innings.

UCLA will now face Maryland once again on Monday night for the opportunity to advance to the Super Regional next weekend. This will be the third game between the two teams this weekend, with the Terrpains taking the first game Saturday night 4-1 and the Bruins responding Sunday night with a victory of their own.

If precedent is any indication, UCLA should be the favorites going into tomorrow, as they haven't lost a three-game series at home this entire season.

There's no word yet on who might get the call to pitch for the Bruins on Monday, but with elimination games of this sort, with four days to rest until Friday night's Super Regional, it's a fair bet that basically every pitcher on staff will be available.

The final game of the Los Angeles regional will start at 8 PM and will be televised live on ESPNU.
