Barcello a Hot Commodity

Jun. 26 -- Several high major schools have offered the 2017 point guard, and UCLA could join the mix soon...

Alex Barcello was determined to maximize his experience at the NBPA Camp. The 6-2 point guard did his best to absorb the key lessons that showered down upon the event’s participants throughout the week.

”All the former NBA players and current NBA players are telling me to control the game,” Barcello said. “If you’re the one guard, you have to pick (opponents) up fullcourt and change the pace of the game and keep the tempo in your hands.”

Barcello enjoyed a successful week carrying out those lessons and more. He’s a solid, ball control point guard who possesses an accurate jump shot with three-point range, and he’s also a creative passer. While not one of the more explosive guys at the event, he certainly held his own from a physical perspective as well.

Considering that he’s only halfway through his high school career, his offer list is extremely impressive.

Arizona, Virginia, Memphis, Creighton, Colorado, Washington State, DePaul, New Mexico, Grand Canyon, Providence, Oregon, ASU, Utah, St. Mary’s and USC (have offered),” Barcello said, adding that he also holds interest from Marquette, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, Stanford, UCLA and Auburn.

Although tall enough to play either guard position in college — and frequently, he’s considered a combo — Barcello intends to focus on point guard for the next level.

”I’m listed as a combo but I mostly play point guard,” he said. “I like to push the ball, get it uptempo and just keep it fast-paced.”

When queried in a group media session at camp, he went into detail about Virginia and Arizona, two of his early offers.

On Virginia: “I know they’re a great coaching staff, a great program, the ACC. I just know that they really like me, because the first time they saw me they offered me. They’re definitely looking at me hard.”

On Arizona: “(The offer) means a lot. They’re a top program and they like me a lot, it’s close to home, but like I said I’m looking for the best opportunity for me.”
