UCLA On Top For McKnight

Jun. 27 -- The Bruins are the leader for Steffon McKnight, but he won't make a quick decision...

Four-star Mira Mesa receiver Steffon McKnight has been a man of mystery for most of the spring, having participated in the L.A. Nike Camp very early in the spring and then skipping the majority of the big 7-on-7 events over the last few months.

Reporters finally had a chance to speak with him on Saturday, and he had some big news: a top five and a stated leader.

"My top five is UCLA, Arizona State, USC, Washington, and Nebraska," McKnight said. "And that's in order."

The Bruins have jumped into the lead for McKnight, who as recently as the Nike Camp wasn't even listing UCLA as a school that was recruiting him particularly hard. He said the location of UCLA has helped to push the Bruins to the top.

"I just really like the area, just being next to Beverly Hills where all the stars are," McKnight said. "I just really see myself out here."

He has also built a strong relationship with UCLA wide receivers coach Eric Yarber, who has been recruiting him hard over the last few months.

"Coach Yarber, he's really cool man, I really like him," McKnight said. "Every time I see him, he comes up and gives me a big old hug. I really like that a lot. He came to see me in the spring."

McKnight is an interesting prospect, at 6'1 or so but probably only 160 pounds. He's very quick, with good speed, and as such, UCLA is recruiting him as a versatile receiver.

"(Yarber) said he likes me all over the place, slot, outside, wherever," McKnight said. "Whatever I'm able to contribute to the team."

Even with a leader in place, though, there's no plan for a really early decision.

"I definitely would like to commit somewhat early, but I also want to take all five official visits," McKnight said. "So I think I'll end up waiting until Signing Day."

As of now, he thinks he'll take officials to the five schools in his top five, and the only thing he knows right now is that ASU will come first.

"I haven't really thought about my UCLA official too much, but I definitely want to see them play against a tougher team," McKnight said. "See how they handle adversity and stuff like that."
