West Regional Recruiting Roundup

Jul. 20 -- All the news and notes from the West in Scout's weekly Regional Recruiting Roundup...

Trevon Sidney - ATH - La Puente (Calif.) Bishop Amat Committed to USC

Sidney committed last week at The Opening and it’s a big pickup for Trojans. Sidney has been a long time Trojan lean ever since landing an offer last spring and might be the best slot receiver in the west region.

Along with USC, Sidney was also looking at LSU, Notre Dame, UCLA and Washington. He said he still plans to take a few of his official visits, but his commitment to the Trojans looks rock solid. Sidney grew up a big USC fan and it’s tough to envision him going anywhere else.

The athlete is one of the most polished receivers we’ve seen in some time. He’s a precise route runner, has great hands and is explosive in and out of his breaks. He has a great feel for the position and understands how to get open and can make something happen after the catch.

Brandon McKinney- DB - Orange Lutheran (Calif.)

McKinney has early offers from Arizona State and Washington and we expect that list to grow heading in to the fall.

McKinney is a talented safety prospect with all the tools to excel at the next level. He has good size, runs well, is a physical player and looks comfortable coming down hill in run support or dropping back in to coverage.

McKinney camped at UCLA and word is an offer could be coming soon. Arizona is another school showing interest and the athlete plans to unofficially visit ASU and Washington later this summer.

Caleb Kelly - LB - Fresno (Calif.) Clovis West

Kelly cut his list down to seven schools while at The Opening last week and there were a few surprises on and off the list.

The schools who made the cut for Kelly included Michigan, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Oregon, Stanford and USC. Kelly plans to visit Notre Dame and Oregon later this summer and doesn’t plan to make his decision until Signing Day.

Michigan and Oklahoma are the two schools that have been mentioned most with Kelly. He has visited both schools already and will take official visits to each program as well.

Tyjon Lindsey - WR - Las Vegas (Nev.) Bishop Gorman - 2017

Lindsey was one of two underclassmen out West that was invited to The Opening last week and had a very good week.

Lindsey was one of the most explosive receivers in the event, despite being a grade younger than just about everyone else. He had no problem getting open, runs well after the catch and has very soft hands.

He’s a top 25 player in the 2017 class and is only getting better. He’s a package deal with his teammate and brother Tate Martell and USC is the team to beat right now. Alabama, Oregon, Texas A&M and Washington are also involved.

Tyler Vaughns - WR - La Puente (Calif.) Bishop Amat

Vaughns said he’s planning to make a commitment in August at a school ceremony at his high school.

The receiver is one of the most talented players, not only out west, but nationally as well. He’s a silky smooth pass catcher with soft hands and elite body control. He doesn’t have blazing speed but is always open and can get behind a defense.

USC has been a big leader for Vaughns for some time and it will be a major upset if he chooses any other school. He has already visited Alabama and said he would like to get out to Michigan before making his decision. UCLA is trying as well but everyone is chasing USC at this time.
