The Opening: Brandon Burton Evaluation

Jul. 21 -- Gardena (Calif.) Serra athlete Brandon Burton can play on both sides of the ball but worked solely at safety during The Opening and had a strong week...

Brandon Burton is one of the region's best and most versatile football players.
He's a talented receiver but worked out at safety at The Opening and looked very good.

The first thing that jumps out to you with Burton is his instincts. Burton has a very high football IQ and just seems to always know where to be on the field.

He understands route concepts and taking proper angles and you rarely see him out of position. He has also worked hard on his athleticism and looks quicker and more explosive on the field.

He measured in at a solid 190 pounds and tested very well, clocking a 4.66-40, 4.25 shuttle and jumped 33" in the vertical. Our only concern with Burton following his junior season was whether he had the athletic ability and top end speed to play in the secondary at the high BCS level but those questions have been erased after watching him this spring.

Burton is strong and although it's not something you see in a 7v7 setting, is a solid tackler and will be an asset in run support. He also has great ball skills, enhanced by his time at receiver, and is always dangerous when he can get his hands on the ball.

On the recruiting front, Burton is currently favoring Alabama, Arizona, Florida State, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Oklahoma and UCLA.
