Chris Gaston is a player who impressed us all spring during the 7v7 circuit. He's a physical defensive back who can play corner or safety and plays with an edge.
Gaston missed almost his entire junior season with a lower leg injury and was just rounding back in to shape this past spring and summer. At 6-2, 180 pounds, Gaston is a big corner with good ball skills and above average athleticism.
We saw him in action over the weekend against a very good Mater Dei team and Gaston was one of the best players on the field. He was strong in coverage, solid in run support and had one of the most impressive plays of the game when he jumped a route, picked off a pass one handed and took it back 35 yards for a touchdown. We could see him playing corner or safety in college and he's definitely a Div I level talent.
On the recruiting front, Gaston is hearing from a couple of Pac 12 programs but interest should pick up over the course of the season.
"UCLA and Washington State are talking to me," Gaston said following the game over the weekend. "I talk to Coach Martin (UCLA DB coach) on a regular basis, he hits me up on twitter a lot. I've been talking to Washington State more lately as well and I would love to take visits to both schools during the season.
"It's still early for me so I plan to go through the recruiting process. A lot of players are already committed and have their offers but for me, I'm just getting started. That's why I want to wait a little and see who comes after me. Then I'll schedule some visits and go from there."
