Bruins in the NFL Update

Sep. 4 -- Check out how some former UCLA Football players are doing in the NFL after the latest cuts...

Akeem Ayers, LB, St. Louis Rams, 2011-Pres.

Status: Lock to make the roster. 9/2/15 Update: Remains in a position battle for the starting OLB spot with Jo-Lonn Dunbar.

Anthony Barr, LB, Minnesota Vikings, 2014-Pres.

Status: Didn’t come in to camp completely healthy but should be fine. Expected to make a leap in his development and be a pro bowl level linebacker. 9/2/15 Update: Returned from Injury on 8/18/15. Hasn’t experienced any further injuries and is expected to be in the starting lineup for season opener vs. the 49ers.

Malcolm Bunche, OL, Philadelphia Eagles, Rookie

Status: Having a nice camp and has a good shot to make the team at guard. Chip Kelly recently said of Bunche “He’s a real good young prospect. He can move people. He’s a guy to keep an eye on”. 9/2/15 Update: Made it through first cuts and is on the roster bubble leading into final cuts. Is in a position battle with veteran Julian Vandervelde and the likely winner will make the team.

David Carter, DT, Jacksonville Jaguars, 2011-Pres.

Status: Signed 1 year deal this past summer. Didn’t make a squad in 2014 and will have a battle to make the Bear’s roster. Fun side note, but Carter is a Vegan. How many Vegan DT’s can there be? 9/2/15 Update: Made 75 man roster. Is on the bubble but has a good chance.

Nate Chandler, OT, Carolina Panthers, 2012-Pres.

Status: Projected to be the backup Right Tackle. Tore his Meniscus towards the end of 2014. 9/2/15 Update: Very likely to make the 53 man roster as a rotational OG and Special Teamer.

Derrick Coleman, RB, Seattle Seahawks, 2013-Pres.

Status: Battling a recent hamstring injury but if and when healthy, expected to be on the 53 man roster and continue his spot duty at RB and key role in Special Teams. 9/2/15 Update: Back on the field and competing for the starting FB position (as well as 3rd string HB spot duty).

Shaquelle Evans, WR, New York Jets, 2014-Pres.

Status: Status: Has had a good camp thus far. Recently suffered a minor rib injury but should be back soon. In a battle to make the roster but a good chance he makes the practice squad. 9/2/15 Update: Cut on 8/26/15. Still looking to be picked up elsewhere.

Joseph Fauria, TE, Detroit Lions, 2013-Pres.

Status: Recently suffered a minor injury (undisclosed). Battling for the 3rd string TE spot. Will likely make roster and continue role as red zone specialist. 9/2/15 Update: Still on the roster but his position is tenuous as Lions recently traded for Tim Wright from Tampa Bay to compete for 3rd String TE roster spot with Joe.

Joe Fauria

Kai Forbath, K, Washington Redskins, 2011-Pres.

Status: Was presumed starter going into camp but has struggled and now is battling for the starting kicking duties. 9/2/15 Update: Fighting for starting position still with Rookie Ty Long.

Cory Harkey, TE, St. Louis Rams , 2012-Pres.

Status: Started 13 games last year as a Tight End/H-Back. Mostly a blocking TE but also excels on Special Teams. Will be a large part of the club’s plans and is one of Coach Fisher’s favorite players. 9/2/15 Update: Heavy rotational player if not starter at HB/FB. Lock to make the 53 man roster.

Mike Harris, OL, Minnesota Vikings, 2012-Pres.

Status: Moved to guard from tackle and is currently listed as a starter on the depth chart. 9/2/15 Update: Slated to be opening day starter at RG.

Aaron Hester, DB, Kansas City Chiefs, 2014-Pres.

Status: Has bounced around a few camps since college. Has a decent shot to make the Chiefs roster. 9/2/15: Didn’t make the 75 man roster cuts. Hasn’t signed on elsewhere.

Brett Hundley, QB, Green Bay Packers, Rookie

Status: Has struggled in camp. Has shown glimpses however, in “instinctual” situations. Seems to be swimming right now and isn’t currently a factor for the backup QB position. 9/2/15 Update: Has improved drastically in camp and has played well recently in games. Packers are starting to figure out that Brett is a gamer and doesn’t practice near as well as he plays in games. Will make the 53 man roster.

Anthony Jefferson, DB, Chicago Bears, Rookie

Status: In camp as a safety. Has had moments and will have to sweat out roster cuts. 9/2/15 Update: Made it past 75 man roster cuts. On the bubble to make 53 man roster.

Datone Jones, DL, Green Bay Packers, 2013-Present

Status: Datone was suspended for the first game of the season for a violation of the substance use policy of the NFL. There is speculation that it was marijuana. He will have to improve his performance noticeably to emerge beyond a situational pass rusher. 9/2/15 Update: Has had a pretty good pre-season. Looks to make the 53 man roster and contribute as a situational pass rusher.

Datone Jones

Eric Kendricks, LB, Minnesota Vikings, Rookie(Pictured Above)

Status: Very good chance he starts at MLB. Has shown in the NFL the same great instincts he had at UCLA. The coaching staff is very excited about him. 9/2/15 Update: The Kendricks man crush has relocated to Minneapolis. Kendricks has had a really good pre-season and if he isn’t starting opening day it will be a matter of time before he does.

Marcedes Lewis, TE, Jacksonville Jaguars, 2006-Pres.

Status: The Jaguars signed Julius Thomas this off season and Marcedes will slide to 2nd string but will still play a major role. 9/2/15 Update: Has had a great camp and will shoulder the bulk of the TE responsibility as Julius Thomas will be out with an injury for the next month or so.

Jeff Locke, P, Minnesota Vikings, 2013-Pres.

Status: Currently starting at punter for the Vikings. Struggled last year and will be monitored closely. 9/2/15 Update: Penciled in as the opening day starter.

Cassius Marsh, DE/LB, Seattle Seahawks, 2014-Pres.

Status: Has excelled in camp and has carved out a spot in the rotation as pass rushing specialist at DE. The Seahawks are pretty loaded at DE (Michael Bennett & Cliff Avril). The eventual plan is to move Marsh to OLB. 9/2/15 Update: Has had a really good camp and will be in the rotation amongst a very talented group up front.

Kevin McDermott, LS, Minnesota Vikings, 2013-Pres.

Status: Trying to beat out 12 year veteran Cullen Loeffler for Long snapper roster position. Too close to call. 9/2/15 Update: Vikings cut Loeffler and Mcdermott is the heir apparent.

Rahim Moore, S, Houston Texans, 2011-Pres.

Status: Listed as starting safety. 9/2/15 Update: Should be starting for the Texans on opening day.

Owa Odighizuwa, DE, New York Giants, Rookie

Status: Jason Pierre-Paul’s accident has created an immediate opportunity for Owa. The feedback so far is “raw but talented”. Moving to a 4-3 from a 3-4 has also added to adjustment time for Owa. 9/2/15 Update: Teammate Roger Ayers on Owa “man, that dude is going to be a monster”. Owa has had a really good camp and depending on Pierre Paul’s digits, he may be starting for game 1 of the regular season.

Logan Paulsen, TE, Washington Redskins, 2010-Pres.

Status: Dealing with a minor toe injury but firmly planted in the rotation at TE. Has become a very good blocker and occasional receiver. 9/2/15 Update: Out for the year with Toe surgery.

Sheldon Price, DB, Indianapolis Colts, 2010-Pres.

Status: Sheldon has mostly been on the practice squad for the Colts for the past two seasons. He is currently fighting for a spot on the 53 man roster. 9/2/15 Update: Made the 75 man roster and is on the bubble. Has had a nice camp and has a chance.

Matt Slater, KR, New England Patriots, 2008-Pres.

Status: Continues to be a very good special teams player. 9/2/15 Update: Returned from injury and will again be Special Teams captain for the Pats.

Xavier Su’a-Filo, OL, Houston Texans, 2014-Pres.

Status: Slated at the start of camp to be a starting guard. Has been passed on the depth chart by Jeff Adams (claimed off waivers). Has struggled with his conditioning and overall play. 9/2/15 Update: Out with an undisclosed foot or leg injury. Should make the 53 man roster but has been a disappointment.

Alterraun Verner, CB, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, 2009-Pres.

Status: Coming off a disappointing 2014, Verner has had a very solid camp thus far. 9/2/15 Update: Has made plays in the pre-season and is looking to have a Pro-Bowl year.

Jordan Zumwalt, LB, Pittsburgh Steelers, 2014-Pres.

Status: Facing an uphill battle to secure a roster spot. He’s been unable to keep weight on and has not been effective in coverage. 9/2/15 Update: Cut on 8/19/15.
