One of our favorite corners over the spring and summer 7v7 circuit was Buena Park's Elijah Gates. Gates is playing on both sides of the ball this season and is off to a strong early start.
Gates has looked good at receiver but we love his upside as a shutdown corner in college. He has good size, quick feet, closes well on the ball, is tough in press coverage and has a natural feel for the position. He doesn't need to clutch and grab but plays with a calmness on the field and is a highly competitive kid.
Gates, currently rated the No. 234 prospect in the 2017 Scout 300 is still waiting for his first offer to come in but is hearing from multiple programs right now.
"I'm currently hearing from Notre Dame, UCLA, Washington, Washington State, Cal, Colorado and Oregon," Gates said. "I've already been to UCLA this year for a game and I'm going to try and go check out Cal and Washington later on if I can.
"UCLA is showing the most interest right now and it sounds like they could be close to offering. I talk with the coaches there a lot and that offer would definitely be a big one for me. I have no plans to make an early decision though. I want to take my time and go through the process. It's obviously a big decision and I want to make sure I make the right one."
