Prospect Recap: Week Five

Sept. 28 -- We look at how UCLA prospects did in week five of the high school football season...

***Game of the Week:***  Gardena (Calif.) Serra def. Los Angeles (Calif.) Loyola, 35-17

UCLA verbal Oluwole Betiku had a big night with six tackles, three for loss and a sack, to roll to an 18-point win over Loyola.  UCLA athlete recruit Brandon Burton added five tackles and two receptions for 17 yards in the win.

Westlake (Calif.) def. Compton (Calif.) Dominguez, 35-7

The Warriors got a 61-yard touchdown from four-star receiver prospect Theo Howard, who finished with seven catches for 133 yards in the blowout.  

Orange (Calif.) Lutheran def. Murrieta (Calif.) Vista Murrieta, 29-14

2017 four-star safety Brandon McKinney, who UCLA offered earlier this month, had five tackles and two pass breakups in the Lancers 29-14 victory.

Long Beach (Calif.) Poly def. Long Beach (Calif.) Wilson, 67-30

The Jackrabbits got a monster night from Jack Jones, who had seven receptions for 160 yards and caught three touchdown passes in a rout.  2017 linebacker Joshua Brown, had 13 tackles and two for a loss and Utah commit Davir Hamilton, added five tackles and two for loss. 

Thornton (Colo.) Horizon def. Broomfield (Colo.) Legacy, 22-21

A late safety of UCLA quarterback commit Matt Lynch doomed Legacy, who fell 22-21 to Horizon.  Lynch was 14-for-18 for 134 yards and two touchdown passes but was held to 18 yards rushing on 11 carries in the loss.

San Diego (Calif.) Cathedral def. Bakersfield (Calif.) Liberty, 24-10

Krys Barnes, one of UCLA's earlier commits, and Liberty fell to Cathedral in an intersectional game.

La Puente (Calif.) Bishop Amat def. Sherman Oaks (Calif.) Notre Dame, 56-7

Just before he committed to UCLA that night, new Bruin verbal Chris Gaston had four tackles in a rout of Notre Dame for the Lancers.

Mission Hills (Calif.) Alemany def. Encino (Calif.) Crespi, 18-0

2018 quarterback Hamish McClure, got no help from the Celts offense, still without UCLA commit Jalen Starks, who is sidelined for a few weeks with a shoulder injury.  UCLA verbal and Crespi defensive end Marcus Moore, helped keep the high-powered Alemany offense in check, in their worst offensive output in two years.

Temecula (Calif.) Great Oak def. Corona (Calif.), 27-17

Great Oak's star running back, UCLA commit Demetric Felton, was everything they needed him to be, rushing for 186 yards on 21 carries, including an 84-yard touchdown, and Felton caught six passes for 87 yards and had 273 yards in total offense. 

Redlands (Calif.) East Valley def. Rialto (Calif.) Carter, 50-0

After giving up only 22 points in the first three games, Carter had a rough time with the defending CIF State D-II champs.  UCLA verbal Lokeni Toailoa had seven tackles, while his brother Leni Toailoa, one of UCLA's newest commits, added seven tackles.   2017 four-star defensive end Jaelan Phillips, who UCLA offered last week, had 11 tackles and three sacks in the shutout.

Oregon City (Ore.) def. Portland (Ore.) David Douglas, 42-14

UCLA commit Osa Odighizuwa had three sacks in the Scots' loss to Oregon City.

Los Angeles (Calif.) Windward def. Lebec (Calif.) Frazier Mountain, 48-0

2016 four-star commit Breland Brandt had four tackles and a sack and caught a 14-yard pass in Windward's shutout victory.

Fresno (Calif.) Bullard def. Fresno (Calif.) Clovis West, 42-28

Clovis West and UCLA soft verbal Darian Owens as well as five-star linebacker Caleb Kelly couldn't stop the offense of Bullard and fell by 14.

Torrance (Calif.) North def. Inglewood (Calif.), 43-0

USC commit Mique Juarez, who UCLA is still after, had six touchdowns that he played a part in, throwing for three and rushing for three, in a blowout for North.

Hayward (Calif.) Moreau Catholic and long snapper commit Johnny Den Bleyker def. Fremont (Calif.) Mission San Jose, 65-0.  Nashville (Tenn.) Montgomery Bell Academy and UCLA tight end commit Jordan Wilson def. Nashville (Tenn.) Father Ryan, 35-0. Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue (QC) John Abbot College and UCLA kicker commit J.J. Molson def. St. Jean (QC), 32-30.  Kapolei (Hawaii) and UCLA committed offensive lineman Sean Auwae def. Honolulu (Hawaii) Farrington, 23-6.  Lafayette (La.) St. Thomas More and UCLA punter commit Bailey Raborn def. Baton Rouge (La.) Catholic, 35-17. 

Bye Week:

West Hills (Calif.) Chaminade and UCLA commit Dymond Lee had the week off.  Los Angeles (Calif.) Crenshaw and UCLA commit Marquis Lawson were off. Concord (Calif.) De La Salle and UCLA defensive line target Boss Tagaloa and tight end recruit Devin Asiasi had a bye.  Corona (Calif.) Centennial and UCLA receiver prospect Javon McKinley were off this week. Clovis (Calif.) Buchanan and defensive end target Bryson Young had a bye.
