Two-way standout Brandon Burton and his Cavalier teammates opened up league play on Friday with a 35-17 win over Los Angeles (Calif.) Loyola.
Burton wasn't targeted much offensively but made an impact from his safety position. Burton has great football instincts and is always around the ball. He's a solid tackler, strong in coverage, has excellent ball skills and always plays hard. He's a natural leader as well and his advanced feel and understanding of how to play the game should allow him to see the field early in college.
On the recruiting front, Burton was supposed to take his first official visit to Ohio State a couple of weeks ago but had to re-schedule it. He's now close to locking that one in.
"It looks like I'll be going to Ohio State November 21 for the Michigan State game," Burton said. "That should be a great game between a couple of top five teams. I have Oklahoma this coming weekend (Oct. 3) and I'm looking forward to that one. The following week (Oct. 10), I have Florida State and Notre Dame is (Oct. 17).
"Alabama on (Nov. 7) will be my final visit and I'm still sorting out when I'll make my decision. It could be at the Under Armour AA Game but it might be earlier than that. If I know after my Alabama trip where I want to go, I'll go ahead and commit. I'm not going to wait it out just to do it at an All-American game. As soon as I know, I'll commit, that way these coaches can move on and recruit other players, I feel like that's the right thing to do."
Burton will also take a couple of local unofficial visits.
"I haven't been to a UCLA game yet but I definitely plan on doing that," Burton said. "They're still recruiting me hard and I talk to them all the time. I want to get out to Arizona too. I might try and go up with Khalil Tate when he goes for his official trip but I'm not sure when that is going to be right now."
