Garrett Rand Is A Disruptive Force

Oct. 1 -- Four-star defensive tackle Garrett Rand has lived up to his four-star status this season...

Player: Garrett Rand

School: Chandler (Ariz.) Hamilton

Size: 6-foot-3, 275 pounds

Position: Four-star defensive tackle

Recruiting: Has narrowed his list to five, including Wisconsin, who he is visiting this weekend, Stanford, Washington, Arizona State and UCLA.

Game Scouted: 9/24/2015 versus Peoria Centennial. Hamilton won 34-27.

What To Like: Rand was a beast in this game. He was in the backfield almost all night and he was playing against two very good offensive linemen in Marshal Nathe and Steven Bailey. Rand bench presses over 500 pounds and that weight room strength transfers to the football field. He is almost nearly impossible to block one on one at the high school level. Rand uses his hands very well, often times engaging first and then using his strength to gain separation and make plays. Over the past year, Rand has improved his lateral quickness. In this game he did a good job of slanting and making plays. In this pass game, he pushes the pocket and is disruptive that way.

Areas To Improve: I mentioned above that he does a good job of collapsing the pocket in the pass game, adding some pass rush moved would make him a more complete defensive tackle. Rand is roughly 275 pounds right now and pretty thick, not sure if he can carry 300+ pounds.

Bottomline Rand is one of the West Coast's finest defensive linemen and he showed why in this game. He had a huge performance, on a big stage, against a highly ranked team and did it against very good players. Rand has the strength to hold up against bigger linemen at the next level and is a guy that can contribute early in his college career.
