Bakersfield (Calif.) Liberty linebacker Krys Barnes (6-2, 225) has been to all of UCLA's home games this season, but the Arizona State game was even more meaningful for Barnes since it was a part of his official visit to UCLA.
"It was really cool on my visit," said Barnes. "I’ve been up there for every home game, but to be there with the team, having breakfast and the pregame and then the Bruin Walk, everything about it was pretty cool."
Barnes was hosted on his visit by junior linebacker Jayon Brown.
"Jayon is real cool and funny and after the game, he was showing me what it will be like on the team," said Brown. "He's a real cool guy with a great personality and seems to be a great teammate."
Barnes also got to meet with linebackers coach Scott White and defensive coordinator Tom Bradley.
"Coach White and Coach Bradley told me they're very short on linebacker depth so they want me to train best I can and be ready to come in as a freshman," said Barnes. "That's something that I personally have to do, come in and compete and earn that spot. I know that spot is not going to be given to me. There is a chance that if I do come in ready, I can play. That gives me a lot of confidence but I have to come in and earn it the best way I can."
Hanging out with the other players was one of the highlights for Barnes.
"Meeting with the team and and players was really fun," said Barnes. "That was the best part, meeting most of the team. It's a family atmosphere there."
Family is important to Barnes, which is why the proximity to Bakersfield played a big role in his decision to commit to the Bruins in the spring.
"They can always come to my home games and support me and we're only a couple of hours away so I could come home at any moment or they could come to UCLA," said Barnes.
"We all hung out at the game and the visit and it was cool," said Barnes. "I played with Demetric on Ground Zero, but a lot of the other visitors I knew from The Opening, Theo Howard and Rashard Lawrence. I'm trying to get Rashard over. He's a real nice guy. Theo is really cool too and I talked to him a little."
Barnes plans to graduate in June and enroll before summer and has an ideal weight he wants to be when he gets to Westwood.
"I'm 225 now but I want to get in that 230-235 range when I get there," said Barnes.
