UCLA Prospect Preview: Week Eight

Oct. 16 -- Check out where UCLA prospects will be playing this weekend throughout the country...

***Game of the Week:*** Concord (Calif.) De La Salle vs. Long Beach (Calif.) Poly

There may not have been a game that put California high school football on the biggest stage bigger than the 2001 Poly-DLS game, the game that introduced future UCLA star Maurice Jones-Drew to the nation. While the stakes aren’t nearly as high as that game, and there won’t be the collection of talent on the field like that one, Poly’s visit to the Bay Area will still feature some serious prospects on both squads, including major UCLA targets for each. The Jackrabbits are led by five-star athlete Jack Jones who plays receiver and defensive back as well as 2017 linebacker Joshua Brown, Jayon's younger brother and 2018 safety Cameron McDonald, who UCLA offered last month. Utah commit Davir Hamilton, who has a UCLA offer, plays both ways for the Jackrabbits. De La Salle features UCLA’s top interior line prospect, Boss Tagaloa as well as tight end target Devin Asiasi. The Spartans also boast versatile athlete Antoine Custer, who bolsters their running game.

Gardena (Calif.) Serra vs. Encino (Calif.) Crespi

UCLA will have commits on both squads in this Mission League game. Despite some graduation losses, Serra is still pretty stacked and they're headlined by UCLA verbal Oluwole Betiku, still in only his second year of football this season. Besides Betiku, UCLA is after two-way athlete Brandon Burton too. The Cavs also feature USC commit C.J. Pollard and San Jose State commit Blake Walls at linebacker. Their top youngster is 2018 four-star Merlin Robertson. Crespi running back and UCLA commit Jalen Starks was dismissed from the team earlier this week. That keeps the pressure on 2018 quarterback Hamish McClure, the son of UCLA defensive line coach Angus McClure. Crespi defensive end Marcus Moore, is hoping to be back this week

La Puente (Calif.) Bishop Amat vs. Mission Hills (Calif.) Alemany

Bishop Amat has new UCLA commit Chris Gaston in the secondary along with USC commits Tyler Vaughns and Trevon Sidney. Alemany features 2018 four-star quarterback Brevin White, the son of a UCLA grad and the brother of ASU freshman quarterback Brady White.

West Hills (Calif.) Chaminade vs. Sherman Oaks (Calif.) Notre Dame

Chaminade quarterback/receiver Dymond Lee, a UCLA commit, will lead the Eagles against Notre Dame, which is led by three-star running back Leo Lambert.

Los Angeles (Calif.) Salesian vs. Los Angeles (Calif.) Cathedral

UCLA will have commits on both squads here too, both from the 2017 class, not to mention one of their biggest 2017 targets. Salesian has UCLA verbal Rahyme Johnson as well as 2017 recruit Deommodore Lenoir. Cathedral has safety pledge Rhedi Short along with receiver Jamire Calvin and safety Elijah Blades.

Los Angeles (Calif.) Windward vs. Los Angeles (Calif.) Brentwood

2016 four-star commit Breland Brandt and Windward try to get back on track when they face Brentwood.

Westlake (Calif.) vs. Newbury Park (Calif.)

Westlake brings in four-star receiver Theo Howard, who visited UCLA officially earlier this month and leaves for Texas A&M after and Newbury Park has 2018 quarterback Cameron Rising, who has a couple of early Pac-12 offers.

Fresno (Calif.) Clovis West vs. Clovis (Calif.) Buchanan

Clovis West and UCLA verbal Darian Owens as well as five-star linebacker Caleb Kelly take on Buchanan, which is led by new Oregon commit Bryson Young.

Temecula (Calif.) Great Oak vs. Temecula (Calif.) Chaparral

UCLA commit Demetric Felton and Great Oak meet crosstown foe Chaparral, who has FBS prospect Lloyd Hightower.

Elk Grove (Calif.) Franklin vs. Davis (Calif.)

UCLA safety recruit Lamar Jackson and Franklin take on Davis, which features 2017 tight end Tucker Fisk, who has a UCLA offer, in a league matchup.

Kapolei (Hawaii) vs. Kahuku (Hawaii)

The playoffs begin for UCLA commit Sean Auwae and Kapolei and they’ll have a tough game against Kahuku, which features a pair of Pac-12 recruits in Hirkley Latu and Keala Santiago.
