VIDEO: Noel Mazzone on Cal Defense

Oct. 21 -- UCLA offensive coordinator Noel Mazzone talks about the improvement of the California defense...

On Cal's defense:

They're playing hard.  Sonny and Art, I worked with Art for eight years. I know they're good football coaches. Their kids are playing aggressive and they create a lot of turnovers. It's going to be exciting.

On noticing their defensive improvement:

If you go look at them last year, they could have easily won eight games last year.  They lose on a Hail Mary and then we have to intercept them right at the end.  They were right there. Sonny and those guys have done a great job up there. They're a good football team. Their defense plays more aggressive and up tempo this year.

On Cal's takeaways:

We have to protect the football and we can't give them easy opportunities, especially with Tony's offense. You don't want to get them any extra possessions.

On how close Josh Rosen is ready to be in a shootout:

I think he's getting closer.  We had a little chance there last week and he flashed. I thought he did a nice job. It should be a fun night.

On Darren Andrews:

He's fast and I think he's been a pleasant surprise, him and Stephen. I expect Stephen to get more playing time as the season goes on.  He's enabled us to put Devin outside.
