USA Analysis and Highlights: Top 25 UCLA PG commit Jaylen Hands

Oct. 27 -- Scout's 21st ranked 2017 prospect, Jaylen Hands had a successful showing at the USA Basketball Junior National Team Minicamp. Here are highlights and analysis of the UCLA commit from the event...

MeasurementsJaylen Hands checked in at 6-foot-2 in shoes with a 6-foot-4 wingspan so he has very sufficient size and length for a high major point guard.

Analysis: In June, Hands showed up to the USA Basketball 16u Trials in June and after starting out strong but struggling to keep that level of play up, he didn’t make the final cut. He was much more consistent this time around.

A player that came up with the reputation of being too shoot-first, Hands is at the best place in his career when it comes to mixing scoring and creating.

In fact, Hands was very unselfish in this event and while he did a lot of attacking the basket in transition, he mostly looked to pass in half court settings, something he does very well due to his sharp vision.

Even though he’s a good shooter, Hands rarely forced the issue and took contested jumpers; his decision making was definitely better in this setting.

Another area that Hands has grown over the last year is the pace he plays with. Despite the fact that he’s a good athlete with high level body control, Hands rarely over-penetrates and doesn’t get sped up. He’s becoming better at reading the defense and taking what’s given to him.

The next step for Hands will be taking the defensive side of the court more personally and being a more vocal leader and competitor.

The game comes so easy to him that sometimes it doesn’t look like he’s playing with maximum effort and if his competitive spirit and approach to defense can match his talent level, he can take his game to the next level.

Recruiting: Jaylen Hands is committed to UCLA.
