Game Week Oregon State: Facts and Factors

Nov. 4 -- UCLA has a little bit of a weird relationship with the Beavers, and is very successful going into Corvallis when it's ranked higher than OSU...

• UCLA travels to Corvallis, Oregon, to take on Oregon State Saturday.  The game kicks off at 1:30 p.m. and will be televised by the Pac-12 Networks.

• UCLA is 6-2, 3-2 in the Pac-12, while OSU is 2-6 and 0-5 in the conference.

• With its win over Colorado, UCLA moved up to #22 in both polls.

• UCLA leads the all-time series with the Beavers, 41-16-4.

• Last week, OSU played #13-ranked Utah fairly closely in Salt Lake City. The final score was 27-12, but it was 14-6 heading into the fourth quarter.

• UCLA hasn’t played Oregon State since 2012, in the Rose Bowl, with the #19-ranked Bruins losing to OSU, 27-20.

• It’s the first trip to Corvallis for the Bruins since 2011, when it beat the Beavers, 27-19.

• UCLA’s relationship with OSU for the last 20 years is probably one of the weirdest with any Pac-12/10 opponent.  UCLA hasn’t played OSU the last two seasons, and didn’t play them in 2004 and 2003; UCLA played the Beavers two straight years at home (2005, 2006), and then two straight years in Corvallis (1998, 1999); and UCLA is 5-2 in Corvallis, but 4-3 at home against the Beavers.

• In fact, UCLA went three years in a row without playing OSU (81-83).

• It also played the Beavers in Tokyo in 1980 (and won, 34-3).

• In the last 60 years, a ranked UCLA team has lost only once to a lower-ranked or unranked OSU team, in 1978 (10-1).

• UCLA has won seven of its last eight conference road games and 12 of its last 13 contests played away from the Rose Bowl. The one exception was the loss to Stanford Oct. 15th.

• Oregon State has a first-year head coach in Gary Andersen (51).  Andersen spent just two years in Wisconsin before making the semi-curious jump to Corvallis, which many felt was a lateral move, at best.  He was 19-7 at Wisconsin, and had the Badgers finish both seasons in the AP top 25.  He had to, in fact, pay a $3 million buyout for departing within the first two years of his contract.  Andersen admitted publicly that he left Wisconsin because he was frustrated with the school’s high academic standards for athletes. It’s also been rumored that he didn’t get along with micro-managing AD and former head football coach, Barry Alvarez.  Before Wisconsin, Andersen made a name for himself as the head coach at Utah State – in 2012 finishing the season 11-2 and ranked 16th in the nation.  He’s considered a good defensive coach that has gotten his teams to over-achieve.

• OSU's 0-5 start to the Pac-12 season is its worst since 1997 when it went 0-8.

• Oregon State plays its games in Reser Stadium, with a capacity of 45,674, and a surface of FieldTurf.

• It will the first daytime kickoff at Reser Stadium since last November.

• The all-time attendance record at Reser is 47,249, set in November, 2012, in a game against Oregon.

• Oregon State’s 2-6 record is tied for the Beavers’ worst performance after 8 games of the season in 20 years. The other 2-6 start was in 2011 under Mike Riley, when the Beavers ended up 3-9.

• UCLA is favored by 17 points.

• The weather forecast in Corvallis for Saturday calls for a high of 55 degrees, with a 90% chance of rain.
