San Diego lineman Mike Alves is one of the region's top guard prospects, currently rated No. 3 in the west at his position.
After showing up well on junior film, Alves really impressed at the Nike Opening Regional Camp in Redondo back in April. He measured in at 6-5, 320 pounds, clocked a 5.22-40 and threw the power ball over 41'.
Alves also looked very good in the drills showing good feet for a big man and has the perfect amount of nastiness. He plays with a road grader mentality and is a very physical kid. He plays through the whistle and isn't looking to just block his man but physically manhandle him and put him on his back.
On the recruiting front, this has mainly been a three horse race for Alves with Oregon, UCLA and Wisconsin leading the way. He took his only official visit to Eugene back in early October and we actually thought there was a good chance he could pull the trigger for the Ducks shortly after the trip.
When Alves failed to commit even a month after, it became obvious he was no longer the slam dunk some had thought and he was sincerely open to other schools. While he never officially visited UCLA, he did take an unofficial visit there back in the summer and spent the whole day on campus with his father.
It's tough to envision him picking Wisconsin sight unseen at this time so it looks like a Duck-Bruin battle with Oregon leading early and UCLA making up a lot of ground in the last month.
Alves is planning to tweet out his commitment later tonight around 7:00 PST.
