Washington, UCLA on Short List For Scout 300 DB Brandon McKinney

Nov. 18 -- Orange Lutheran (Calif.) junior defensive back Brandon McKinney had another big game over the weekend and has clearly established himself as one of the premier safety prospects in the class of 2017...

Lancer safety Brandon McKinney is currently rated the No. 270 player nationally in the 2017 Scout 300 and after watching him more this season, he's definitely in line for a nice bump up our board.

McKinney has all the tools to be an elite safety at the next level including size, toughness, athleticism and instincts. He's one of those players that is always around the football and has looked very good on the offensive side of the ball as well.

This past weekend, the Lancers took out St. Bonaventure 54-44 in the 1st round of the Pac 5 playoffs and McKinney was huge in the win. He rushed five times for 121 yards and two touchdowns, caught a 42 yard touchdown and added 14 tackles and a fumble recovery from his safety spot.

On the recruiting front, McKinney took an unofficial visit a couple of weeks ago to Washington and is planning a few other Pac 12 trips as well.

"I had a great time at Washington, I liked it a lot," McKinney said. "I loved the campus and al the nature parts all over, you can't really get that out here in Cali. My mom and I toured the campus together and she loved it  too. I got to spend a good amount of time with the coaches and that was goood too.

"It was a game day but I still spent about 30 minutes with Coach Lake. He was telling me how much they want me in the program and how they haven't offered that many safeties in my class because I'm his main focus right now. I checked out down town Seattle too and overall, I really liked it there. I had a strong comfort level, it felt like home for me and that's what I'm looking for."

McKinney said the Huskies are very high on his list and will be in this one until the end.

"Coach Petersen and the rest of the staff are really showing me a lot of love right now," McKinney said. "I loved that campus and the school itself so you can say Washington is at the top of my list right now.

"I like UCLA a lot too and plan on going down for a visit over Thanksgiving Break. I've been there a few times already and have a former teammate, Keisean Lucier-South, who's there right now. I also want to try and visit Cal and Duke at some point. I'm not planning to make an early decision, I want to take a couple of official visits first so maybe I'll be ready to announce sometime after my senior season next year."
