Like Darnold, it took a while for things to heat up for Sears but once those first few offers started to roll in, the floodgates soon opened. Sears is now nearing 20 scholarship offers and with the Spring evaluation period, expect that list to continue to grow.
On Tuesday, UCLA was one of several schools on hand to visit San Clemente to see Sears in action and offered shortly after his workout.
"Coach Tuiasosopo came out to see me throw," Sears said. "After our practice, I called him up and that's when he offered me a scholarship. I was very excited and hopeful they would offer me. I've had several conversations with Tui and I had a feeling as long as I showed him what kind of arm strength I had, I would get the offer.
"I like Tui a lot, I think we have similar personalties and have the same approach to the game. We speak the same language, which I really appreciate about him. I felt really good out there today, my back is all better now and I think I showed what kind of quarterback I am so I was happy with how everything went down."
Sears said he's in no hurry to make a decision and will take a few more unofficial visits.
"It's still really early for me," Sears said. "I only plan to commit once and then shut things down so I want to make sure that wherever I choose is the right place for me and the perfect school for me. I still want to take a few more visits but I don't have anything set right now.
"I'm going to make a point of getting back to UCLA soon and will also visit Washington sometime in May. Right now, I'm just trying to improve and get better every week. I'm still open to a lot of schools so once I take a few more trips, I think I'll have a better idea what I want to do but I'm not close right now."
