Early Word on Junior Marcus Williams

Marcus Williams, one of the top junior point guards on the West Coast, figures to draw attention from many schools in the next year. One school in particular, though, is out to an early lead for his services...

Marcus Williams, 6-2 PG Los Angeles Crenshaw, is a smooth lefty with deep range on his shot. He played played in the Fullcourt Press Fall Showcase Sunday and shared his thoughts on the early stages of his recruitment.

Asked if he had started to form a list yet and Marcus said, "Yeah, UCLA, Arizona and USC are all on my list."

Does that mean he'd prefer to stay in the west? "Yes," Marcus replied. "I like the warm weather and I want my family and friends to be able to see me play."

Williams said playing time would be a major factor in his decision. "I want to play right away," Williams said. "Hopefully, I'll be able to start my first year."

When asked if he had a leader, Marcus replied, "UCLA. They're a competitive program, they're on TV all the time and there's a good social life. I don't want to stay in my dorm all the time. There's a lot to do in L.A. and I have friends here.

Any chance that he will make an early commitment prior to next summer? "I don't think so," Marcus said. "I'll probably wait until after the summer, but do it before my senior season."

While Williams has good guard skills, he's currently more of a shoot-first, pass-second type of player. We asked if he saw himself playing the point or more of a combo guard role. "I prefer the point," Marcus replied. "I like having the ball in my hands."

Marcus told us that he has a 3.2 GPA and he'll take the SAT in October.
