Rhedi Short Backs Off UCLA Pledge

May 9 -- After taking out-of-state trips on back-to-back weekends, three-star safety Rhedi Short decommitted from UCLA on Sunday...

Rhedi Short had gradually been separating himself from his verbal commitment to UCLA for months, so it was no surprise when he completely backed off that pledge Sunday on the heels of another out-of-state visit.

The three-star safety from Los Angeles Cathedral visited Arizona for the second time this spring over the weekend and also took a trip to Oregon two weeks ago, picking up an offer from the Ducks in the process. Arizona State offered shortly after the 6-foot-1, 175-pound prospect went back on the market.

UCLA is in an interesting situation with defensive backs in the 2017 recruiting class, with probably more attainable candidates than there are spots. Assistant coach Demetrice Martin has been known to prefer versatility in his players, with capability to slide around the secondary and line up at multiple spots, and there are several prospects that fit that description.

Three-star safety Trajon Cotton from Sacramento (Calif.) Inderkum and four-star Deommodore Lenoir of Los Angeles Salesian are both high on the Bruins, and Provo (Utah) Timpview four-star Chaz Ah You, the No. 1 safety in the West region, also favors UCLA. The thought is that the Bruins intend to take one safety along with a handful of cornerbacks in this class.
