Hayward (Calif.) Stellar Prep outside linebacker Addison Gumbs (6-4, 217), was planning to make his college announcement in June.
But the West's top outside linebacker said that he's now pushing it back a month and will decide in July instead.
"Originally I had said June, but now it’s looking like July," said Gumbs. "I’m not too sure what day for sure, maybe before The Opening, maybe after. It's hard to set a specific time."
Three schools had been most prominently mentioned for Gumbs, but now seven schools are being considered with an eighth also getting a little attention.
"It's been mostly USC, UCLA and Washington but besides that, Oklahoma, Oregon, Texas A&M and Mississippi State are hanging in there," said Gumbs. "Those are the seven schools I could say I'm most interested in."
And a Big Ten school is trying to crack that list too.
"Nebraska is picking it up a little too," said Gumbs. "I might try and check out Nebraska for the first time. That's the only school I'm considering that I haven't really seen so far. The other schools, I've been to and done visiting them. Some of them, I've seen a ton."
He's taken multiple visits to UCLA, USC and Washington in the spring and for the most part, he's done with his trips.
"I think I'm pretty much done with visits unless I go check out Nebraska," said Gumbs.
Gumbs said it's hard to distinguish which school is recruiting him the hardest.
"Those seven, eight schools, those are the ones recruiting me the hardest," said Gumbs. "They're all great programs and it's hard to say one is recruiting me harder than the others."
Gumbs said that when he set June for his announcement, he thought it would be easy, but as June came, he realized he needed more time.
"When I said I was going to commit in June, I said that in May so it seemed like a ways away still but then June came up fast," said Gumbs. "Now I feel like July is the right time for me to announce."
Gumbs said he's only going to visit the school he commits to and will be ready to be somewhere come January.
"I'm graduating in December so I'll be somewhere in January after the Army Bowl," said Gumbs. "I'm still enjoying the process, it's a blessing and everything has been good so far. I'm still having a lot of fun with it."
Gumbs had gone to The Opening Oakland regionals twice and last week was added to The Opening Finals roster.
"That was a blessing," said Gumbs. "It's come with all the other blessings I've achieved and it's been really great. It does a lot for my school and what my coach and dad are preaching, that if you work hard and do what you're supposed to do, great things will come."
