Elijah Hicks Talks USC Offer, Will Trim List Soon

June 29 -- La Mirada (Calif.) defensive back Elijah Hicks had a strong showing at the USC Rising Stars Camp last week and picked up a scholarship offer from the Trojans yesterday...

It's a deep year for defensive backs out West this year and Elijah Hicks is one of the best in the region.

Hicks is a talented cover corner and was one of the top prospects we saw at the USC Rising Stars Camp last Wednesday. In fact, we thought there was a chance Hicks could pick up an offer from the Trojans immediately after the camp but the timing was just fine for him.

"I thought I had a good camp, I was happy with how I did," Hicks said. "I talked to Coach Helton after the camp and he told me to call him on Tuesday. I just called him and we had a good talk and he offered me a scholarship so that's big for me. He said they wanted to meet as a staff and make sure everyone was one the same page before offering and I get that.

"He told me he liked how competitive I was and how hard I worked out there. He didn't push for a commitment at all but said they would love to have me when I was ready to make a decision. He encouraged me to take my visits and go through the process and said when I'm ready to decide, they'll have a spot for me."

Hicks said growing up, USC is a school he always followed.

"It's definitely a big offer for me," Hicks said. "Growing up in Southern California, every one wants an offer from USC and UCLA. I already had the UCLA offer so the offer from USC was great and I'm definitely interested. Now it's just about building that relationship with them because I didn't have a lot of contact with them prior to the camp.

"I've been to USC a 1,000 times already so I know a lot about the school and the campus. Jack Jones is a close friend of mine, we grew up together so I've been up there a lot with him and actually stayed with him a few nights."

Hicks has already visited OregonOregon State and UCLA this spring but said he's probably done with trips for the rest of the summer.

"I want to get to Washington but I'll probably just wait and do an official visit there," Hicks said. "I still have a pretty big list of schools and need to narrow it down to eight or so and then hopefully get down to five. The schools recruiting me the hardest are probably Washington, Oregon, Northwestern, UCLA and Colorado.

"I had a great visit to Oregon and want to get back there for an official visit. I talk to Coach Meat (Martin) at UCLA all the time, we have a really good relationship and I might do an official there, even though they're local. Colorado was my first offer and they're definitely in the mix as well.

"Stanford is another school I'm hoping to hear from and I would love to get an offer from them. I want to take my visits during the season to see what the game atmosphere is like. Ideally, I would like to make my decision sometime towards the end of the season. After I take my visits, that's when I'll go ahead and make a commitment."
