3-star OL Jaxson Kirkland Checks out UCLA

June 30 -- Portland (Ore.) Jesuit offensive lineman Jaxson Kirkland took an unofficial visit to UCLA last week and enjoyed his time in Westwood...

Portland (Ore.) Jesuit offensive lineman Jaxson Kirkland (6-7, 320), was offered by UCLA earlier in the spring, but until last week, he hadn't had a chance to visit the campus.

Kirkland had visited a number of other schools that had offered, but UCLA and California were set for summer trips.

He'll visit Cal in July and also plans to return to Washington State and Oregon State.

The visit to UCLA was his first time checking out the Southern California school.

"I liked it a lot, the campus was beautiful and I got to meet the whole coaching staff," said Kirkland.  "I like the lifestyle in L.A.  UCLA is more on the outskirts, by Beverly Hills and Bel Air and Westwood is a little more isolated from the city so it was nice."

Kirkland spent much of his time with offensive line coach Adrian Klemm.

"Coach Klemm was a really nice guy, really down to earth," said Kirkland.  "He spent a lot of time talking with my mom and dad.  He only has offered around 12 lineman so I'm grateful to receive an offer from him.  He doesn't offer that many kids because he wants the offer to mean something instead of offering a bunch of guys like some schools do.  We talked about what he liked about me and what I liked about the school."

Kirkland also talked with Connor McDermott and Kolton Miller.

"I met both their tackles and one of them is a senior (McDermott), so when I would come in as a freshman, I'd have a chance to compete for that spot," said Kirkland.

Kirkland said the facilities that UCLA is building impressed him.

"Pretty much everywhere I've been, someone is building a new project," said Kirkland. "There, they have a really nice project and we saw the blueprints and how it was looking and it matches up pretty well with everything else. From what I saw of it, it looks really nice."

Kirkland said he's focusing on five schools right now, Cal, UCLA, Washington State and Oregon State and is still considering Texas Tech.

"But I don't know if Texas Tech has any more room.  They're still in my top five," said Kirkland.  "But I kind of know I want to play in the Pac-12 so I'm focused on those four Pac-12 schools."

Kirkland announced last week that he'll make his decision on August 14th.

"Oregon said they could look at me and offer me my senior year and I still am hoping for Washington," said Kirkland.  "But we'll see.  I want to announce before my senior year, then focus all on Jesuit."
