UCLA Commit Jeffrey Manning Has Dream DB Class In Mind

July 12 -- One of the fastest rising defensive backs in the West Region snatched up an offer from UCLA and names two others he would love to play with...

Evaluation Notes:

Jeffrey Manning heads into the fall as the No. 13-rated cornerback prospect in the West Region, which is loaded with top-tier defensive backs in the 2017 class. He has good length and a projectable frame, and has positional versatility that allows him to slide around in the secondary and fill various spots. The three-star from Los Angeles (Calif.) Cathedral is steady across the board, even if he won't wow recruiters with any one trait.

Programs Mentioned in Video:

UCLAColorado and Washington.

Blair Angulo:

Scout.com here with Jeffrey Manning, three-star defensive back from Cathedral in Los Angeles. And you’re wearing a UCLA sweatshirt—a new UCLA commit. What was it like for you to make that decision after landing that offer?

Jeffrey Manning:

Honestly, it was a life-changing experience to be able to commit to my dream school, which honestly I feel is the best decision for me and my future and my family, as well.

Blair Angulo:

What does coach Demetrice Martin kind of see in you? What did he say that he loves about your game and the skillset that you could bring to that team?

Jeffrey Manning:

It was just my position versatility. Because I could not only play corner, but I can also play safety and nickel, if need be. And just overall, my athleticism, as well.

Blair Angulo:

Right, right. And you’ve mentioned UCLA as a dream school—a place you wanted to be since you were little. What makes that place so special to you?

Jeffrey Manning:

Just the tradition behind it all, and always watching the games on Saturday with my dad at the Rose Bowl. And having an opportunity to play at the Rose Bowl is honestly just life-changing.

Blair Angulo:

I know that you have obviously been to campus before, and I know you’ve had a lot of recruiting attention, as well. From a positional standpoint, do you have a preference? I know you have some versatility—you can play safety, you can play some nickel, you can play kind of on the edge as a corner. Any preference for you?

Jeffrey Manning:

Honestly, no. Just wherever I could see myself on the field early.

Blair Angulo:

Who do you kind of emulate your game after? I know UCLA has different types of corners, you know kind of longer guys, and then their safeties are kind of your size and stuff like that. Is there anybody in that secondary that you kind of model yourself after?

Jeffrey Manning:

In particular, probably from a physicality standpoint, I wanna say Jaleel Wadood. He’s nice, honestly. I remember him at Bosco. He’s an animal. Just seeing him go to UCLA, I was like, "Wow.” So that was nice, too.

Blair Angulo:

And now you’re over at Cathedral, a recent transfer. And obviously they have Hunter Echols, who’s already committed to UCLA. How big of an influence was that in your mind?

Jeffrey Manning:

It was a big one, just to know that I’ll have someone going alongside me into the season. I mean we go to the same high school, and now college as well, me and Hunter, and our relationship is pretty good, too, so.

Blair Angulo:

Right, right. I know that UCLA and this class—they need a lot of defensive backs, and that’s kind of been a priority for Coach Meat. What did that mean to you, to kind of get one of those spots, knowing that he wants to take a few guys?

Jeffrey Manning:

That he truly did believe in my skillset and that he could truly see me being a Bruin. Because Coach Meat, he’s a great coach, and I just want to thank him for that, as well.

Blair Angulo:

So you’re the only defensive back right now in this class.

Jeffrey Manning:

Yeah, so far.

Blair Angulo:

But he’s targeting a few other guys. Who do you have your eyes set on? Who would you hope to play alongside with at the next level?

Jeffrey Manning:

Right now, I wanna say Darnay (Holmes). He’s amazing, honestly. Thomas (Graham), if we could get him. We can’t get Deommodore (Lenoir) anymore, he committed to Oregon. So just those two guys right there.

Blair Angulo:

Alright, so Thomas Graham and Darnay Holmes would make up kind of a dream class. What’s your pitch to them if you were to recruit them?

Jeffrey Manning:

Westwood. It’s amazing out there. And the football program. And the education—you can’t beat it. And it’s in a “central location.” It’s Los Angeles, too. Not too far from home, you’re right there. Great football.

Blair Angulo:

Yeah, you mentioned, your dream school. Are you completely done with the recruiting process? You gonna take anymore visits or anything like that?

Jeffrey Manning:

I’m still gonna take my visits, but as of right now, my recruiting process is probably shut down.

Blair Angulo:

Okay. Who else is reaching out to you? Who’s been making a push?

Jeffrey Manning:

Oh, I’ve been talking to here and there Colorado, UW… but it’s UCLA.
