Potential WR Target Jamire Calvin Staying Patient with UCLA

July 12 -- With two teammates already committed to UCLA, one of the top receivers in the Golden State is keeping the Bruins in his top list of schools...

Evaluation Notes:

Jamire Calvin, the No. 7-rated wide receiver in the West Region, is one of the faster, shiftier prospects in the land and that makes him dangerous whenever he has the ball in his hands. At 5 feet 10, 150 lbs., the three-star prospect from Los Angeles (Calif.) Cathedral might not be the biggest player on the field but he sure is electric, finding ways to get open quickly and gain separation down field. He showed good burst and the ability to make defenders miss in the Battle at the Beach tournament.

Blair Angulo:

Here with Jamire Calvin from Cathedral, and, Jamire, let’s start with Cathedral, and what it’s like now to prepare for your senior season, which is gonna be a big one for you?

Jamire Calvin:

It’s just a really good experience, being able to come out as one of the top players in the nation, now, I kind of proved myself. And just being able to help my team and my school get some exposure, so some of the other guys can get some looks and offers, also.

Blair Angulo:

Right. From a recruiting standpoint, it’s been a big off-season for you. And now you’re kind of locked in with the Top 8. You recently released the Top 8—I’ll put you on the spot a little bit. Rattle off that Top 8.

Jamire Calvin:

My Top 8 was Alabama, Arizona State, Cal, Notre Dame, Nebraska, Oregon State, UCLA, Washington State.

Blair Angulo:

Alright, so let’s start with Alabama. I know that’s been a school that’s been on you more recently and kind of showing a little more interest. What’s the latest with the Crimson Tide?

Jamire Calvin:

The latest with Alabama is that I’ve just been talking to them a lot—the receiver coach, Napier, and Coach Kiffin—we’re just talking pretty much every day. I’m getting a feel for them. I’m gonna be back out there on the 17th to the 20th, so in like two weeks I’ll be back out there. It’s just good especially to hear from Alabama; I didn’t expect that to happen.

Blair Angulo:

Okay. And I know you’ve locked in three official visits already. Where are you headed this season?

Jamire Calvin:

The three officials I’ve locked in as of now are Notre Dame, Nebraska, and then Arizona State.

Blair Angulo:

So you’re going out to Nebraska for the Oregon game—that’s gonna be early in the season. What do you hope to learn about the Corn Huskers? You’ve been there before, but are there any questions that you have in your mind heading into that?

Jamire Calvin:

I pretty much asked them all the questions that I had. Just to see them live and to play against a different team and see how it is from a coach’s standpoint in a live game. That’s pretty much what I want to see.

Blair Angulo:

I know that fan-base has been on you guys pretty heavily, especially as California recruits. How high have they set the bar for you?

Jamire Calvin:

They set the bar really high—for anyone being recruited by Nebraska. They’re pretty much on you every day and you’re ..., and that’s pretty much what you’re gonna see everyday. Just “GBR” from all the fans.

Blair Angulo:

Right. And Arizona State you also mentioned. Do you know which game you’re going to get out there for?

Jamire Calvin:

Not sure yet, I just know I’ll be taking an official visit there.

Blair Angulo:

Okay, and what do you like about the Sun Devils?

Jamire Calvin:

Just the offense and the way they spread the ball. And how they took Devin Lucien in last year. He went from 300 yards at UCLA, then came in and had over 1,000 at Arizona State.

Blair Angulo:

And Notre Dame—also another school that’s been showing a lot of interest. What do you like about the Fighting Irish?

Jamire Calvin:

Just the tradition that the school brings. Also that they’re a winning team—they’re one of the most winning teams in college football. Also, from an academic standpoint, they’re one of the greatest academic schools in the nation.

Blair Angulo:

And lastly, UCLA’s a local school that’s been showing a little more interest in you. What are you hearing from the Bruins, and how big would an offer from them be?

Jamire Calvin:

It would be a really big one. I mean, I’m from Pasadena, and that’s where the Rose Bowl is, so being able to play in my city would be a really great experience. But yeah, I’ve been just hearing from them a lot, and they said just to stay patient—just going through the process with them.

Blair Angulo:

Have you set a decision date yet or anything?

Jamire Calvin:

No, I’m going to take all my officials first and then sort of figure it out from there.
