Joseph Lewis is a five-star receiver on Scout and rated the No. 11 overall player in the country. He came in to The Opening as the top rated receiver in the country and we didn't see anyone better this week. Some guys are bigger, some are faster and some may have better hands but we didn't see anyone who matched his combination of all three traits.
He measured in at a rock solid 6-foot-2, 205 pounds and didn't drop a ball that we saw. He came in to the event with a sore hip and groin and fought through it most of the week, showing the ability to separate and had no problems getting open. He didn't have quite the same burst that we've seen in the past but Lewis runs very well, has excellent body control and is very good fighting for the ball in jump ball situations.
There is no doubt Lewis has tremendous upside and when you consider he's a year younger than most in his grade and will be a 17 year old freshman in college, it's even more impressive how talented he is. There are times when Lewis almost looks bored but when he's motivated, there aren't many players with his raw ability and potential.
Lewis will take official visits to the Arizona Wildcats, Nebraska Cornhuskers, Oklahoma Sooners, Oregon Ducks and is keeping that 5th visit open right now. Locally USC is heavily involved as well and UCLA is trying as well.
