ACC, Pac-12, and SEC programs vying for nation's 41st-ranked defensive tackle Xach Gill

July 19 -- Several schools are still pursuing three-star defensive tackle Xach Gill and the Wake Forest (N.C.) standout spoke with Scout at the recent Shrine Bowl invite practice about his recruitment...

Evaluation Notes: Gill is a big, powerful defensive lineman. He is strong at the point of attack and plays with good leverage. Gill does a nice job of shedding blockers and puts himself in position to make plays. He is effective against both the run and pass. Gill is also smart and plays extremely hard.

Programs mentioned in this videoNorth Carolina, NC State, Tennessee, UCLA, Virginia and Virginia Tech.

Michael Clark:

Michael Clark here for Scout, here at the Shrine Bowl Invite Combine with defensive linemen, Xach Gill, one of the top defensive linemen in the country. Xach, you’ve been taking it easy this summer. Only taken a few visits. I believe you said North Carolina and NC State are the only schools you’ve gone to—so in-state schools. Let’s start with North Carolina. What was your favorite part of that visit?

Xach Gill:

Probably my favorite part of that visit was just working out with Coach Scott, and just getting a feel for his coaching.

Michael Clark:

Freak Show? Is that where you went?

Xach Gill:

Yeah.

Michael Clark:

Obviously a huge camp with a lot of good players. What can you take away from that camp?

Xach Gill:

Just a learning experience—being able to work with him one-on-one.

Michael Clark:

You hit on Coach Scott—talk about the relationship you guys have been developing?

Xach Gill:

Me and Coach Scott—we talk basically every week. He’s a real high-energy type of coach.

Michael Clark:

Coach Fedora’s obviously doing a great job—got a lot of momentum going on over there. What was his message to you when you were there?

Xach Gill:

Basically we talked about my upcoming season this year—my senior season—and just how I need to be a leader and make sure I carry my team.

Michael Clark:

When do you see yourself getting back to North Carolina?

Xach Gill:

I haven’t really planned out a visit for next time, but probably soon.

Michael Clark:

NC State? What about that visit? What did you think?

Xach Gill:

It was a good visit. I actually toured the campus and everything and got to meet with the coaches one-on-one.

Michael Clark:

What was your favorite part of that trip?

Xach Gill:

Probably just interacting with the coaches on a different level.

Michael Clark:

Which coach did you spend the most time with?

Xach Gill:

I probably spent the most time with Coach Nielson.

Michael Clark:

What was his message to you? You’re obviously a top target for them.

Xach Gill:

Just to enjoy the process.

Michael Clark:

Before the summer, you said off-camera you’re going to make some visits. Where else are you heading before the start of the season?

Xach Gill:

Probably visiting Virginia Tech, Virginia, UCLA, and Tennessee.

Michael Clark:

Let’s talk about those four schools, with a quick thought on each school, starting with the first school. What do you like about that particular school?

Xach Gill:

Virginia Tech? I like Coach Wiles. Me and him interact a lot and just talk about things going on.

Michael Clark:

Next school?

Xach Gill:

Virginia. Coach Ruffin McNeill. Me and him have a good relationship.

Michael Clark:

Next school?

Xach Gill:

UCLA. Me and Coach Angus, we talk pretty often. I just need to get down there; I’m gonna visit.

Michael Clark:

Last school?

Xach Gill:

Tennessee. Me and Coach Thigpen. We have a good relationship. He told me I could potentially come there and have a big impact.

Michael Clark:

Last few things. What do you want to see on those trips, Xach? I know these are bid-for-bids, we’re obviously getting closer because I know you’re gonna enroll early. What specifically are you looking to see while you’re on those campuses?

Xach Gill:

Just want to get a feel for the coaches and how they coach and the environment of the campuses.

Michael Clark:

Official visits—how is it gonna work this fall? How many do you wanna take and do you know of any schools that are gonna give you visits for sure?

Xach Gill:

I don’t know which schools I’m going to visit for sure, but I’m going to take all my official visits during the season, so I can still have the option to graduate early.

Michael Clark:

Any school standing out for you right now? Where are you in the process?

Xach Gill:

Right now I’m in the process of just trying to get a feel and trying to narrow it down.

Michael Clark:

Deciding factors when you sit down with your family and coaches? What are they going to be?

Xach Gill:

Education, how early I can make an impact, and what’s best for me and my family.
